It’s always the fault of the victim, doncha know. A Republican operative here in Sacramento, drunk as a skunk, was doing over 70 on a city street. He lost control, hit a car with three African American young women and a 2-year-old baby and killed them all. His defense? They did not get out of his way. He worked long and hard to “prove” they were reckless. They were going 16 MPH, were in the correct lane, but it was THEIR fault since he was taught to “swerve to the left”, and they did not move. The judge and jury not only did not buy it, the judge threw the book at him, gave him the highest sentence possible because he utterly refused to accept ANY responsibility. His GOP friends are grumbling to this day. It couldn’t be HIS fault – it had to be the young woman victim driving the other car. After all, they were Black, and one was an unwed mother. If you’ve come here, that may be what you want to study? Whatever you do, go with your passion. I started college as an Ed. major but realized it was BOR-ing. I switched to History and loved it. Went on to Sociology and combined the two and loved it. It brought me where I am today – an underpaid person working for a non-profit, but I still love it. If you don’t love what you study, you will be a grind all your life. The one alternative is to do something for a job but not MAKE it your life. Several activists whom I know work for factories, the post office, etc. but put all their energies into their political work outside of their money work. Either way they are following their passion. Blackwater/Xe has a hideously unsavory history that must be stopped. I cannot recall a private army ever being this powerful before, and it is deeply worrisome to see Prince co-opt a Muslim ally who clearly wants this force to prevent democratic uprisings. Having an American (ostensibly) firm kill people from Dubai seeking democracy is a hideous nightmare. But I think that’s what they are there to do. So many people are addicted to something, some need to soothe the savage beast within, that we needed to deal with that as a separate issue. It never made much sense to me to ‘commodify’ addictions – meth over here, alcohol there, food, sex, gambling in that room, when the issue is WHY ARE WE ADDICTS? If you read Christopher Lasch on narcissism, you get to the heart of addiction – the empty core that lurks in so many people. We fill it up however we can. Until we throw over the hyper-individualism and hyper-competitiveness with its winner-take-all mentality, we will not have healthy people or a healthy society. The poor just get the yuckier stuff.
