They make the Taliban look almost reasonable, IMHO. There is something at least understandable about very poor people trying to curtail things that undermine the very fragile stability of that very meager society. It is totally NOT relevant to a large and quite flourishing society such as ours. Unless the goal is to create a large and penniless dependent workforce. Again.

What they purport are “eternal” truths are not. That’s my point. YOU were absolutely correct! Remember that they jumped on this bandwagon in the 19th century after the Civil War as corporate consolidation and Robber Barons were just getting going. Abortion was not a sin so much as a threat to expanding the laboring populations. When they began commodifying labor, especially with the end of slavery, it became essential to curtail any action that limited the supply of dependent workers. You also saw the opening of doors to the “huddled masses” who kept the dependency flourishing. Abortion strengthened families’ ability to be self sufficient just as family planning did.

In the early 20th century, Harper’s Magazine bravely gave Margaret Sanger voice for birth control. Her biggest and most vociferous critic? Theodore Roosevelt who argued for large families without limit. Fine for him – he had megabucks. But for those in need, it kept them poor and willing to work 12-14 hour days for pennies. All in the game plan.

What I don’t understand about racists is the obsession with skin color. Skin just keeps your organs from falling out. The color is not germane to that job. Only people I’d worry about are the ones trailing their spleens behind them…

In the US abortion was legal from the colonial days until 1869. No embryo or fetus was considered “human” until “quickening” which was near viability. Only when Victorian Values gained their stranglehold on American and British society did abortion become illegal c. 1869 after being totally legal and morally acceptable under British and then US common law from time immemorial. Birth control was also legal though obviously not very good, but no one thought it immoral to try to prevent unintended births. Therefore yes, in part, these states are going back to Victorian Values, but those late 19th-century values themselves were massive departures from common and customary standards.

Cher – we all know the difference in our attitudes. Weiner never (apparently) laid a hand on another woman. He sexted and lied, but if Vitter did not resign, then why should Weiner when what Weiner did was stupid but what Vitter did was ILLEGAL?

My only reaction is that Weiner never told other people how to live. Vitter did and legislated on behalf of “the sanctity of marriage” by outlawing same sex marriage equality. HYPOCRITE thy name is Vitter. Not Weiner.

To Weiner I have a Dr. Phil question: what WERE you thinking????? And – how’s that working for you?

Right on, bito. Those “Christians” are nothing such. They believe in embedded inequality – they are deserving, the rest of us not at all. They claim the beatitudes no longer are “operative”, so they feel entitled to decide who can live or die.

I just got a Linkedin request from someone who heads a group of private investigators. WHY this dude “friended” me is totally unclear, so my answer is – no way!

The idea that everyone “out there” deserves your attention and personal info is SO STUPID. And so is sending stuff about your personal self (sexting) in a world of both electronic glitches AND Andrew Breitbart. There is no such thing as privacy in the electronic world, so GROW UP folks who are inclined to do that sort of thing. You want everyone to see your undies, be sure that they will.

I have to say, AdLib, that we don’t NEED Big Brother, corporate or government. We’re galloping to privacy oblivion all on our own!

I was in Vancouver at a restaurant filled with fans when the shot scored in Game One. Yowie – so much energy!!!! Vancouver was a zoo – could barely move downtown – but so joyous! Later a group of us were walking when a guy wearing a Boston shirt came up and high fived the guys. My one question – how the HELL did he know we were Americans? Not one damned thing revealed that fact. Life is strange. Good on Vancouver – nice city, nice people, deserve a win.

It’s debatable that the Ryan plan would cost less. The escalation in ER use for those who no longer are covered would increase the amount of “uncompensated care” for which state and federal governments have been shelling out billions already (pre health care reform). We’d now get far more older people in ERs, and it would be a disaster financially.

Unions already ARE given the exact same rights as corporations under Citizens United. However, there are brand new state inititatives in CA to forbid both corporations and unions from using member money to engage in elections, and you know that if that were to pass, the SCOTUS decision would trump the corporate limitations, but it is not clear it would be the same with unions. Why? Unions DO use members’ money while corporations use investors’ money which is willingly relinquished via mutual funds and other means where you have never had voting rights. That inequality is a potential landmine field FOR corporations and AGAINST unions. At the moment, though, both unions and corporations have the same Citizens United legal standing to campaign without limits.

If corporations are “people, too” then, like welfare and other social support recipients, they need to be fingerprinted, show their income receipts every 3 months, and PROVE that they are doing what they promised – creating jobs. No proof? Kicked off the handouts. I’m thinking drug tests for all top management, doncha bet? I say let’s honor them with full human equality and treat them just as we do single Black moms who get $696 per month.

Hey bito!

I am on the Board of Health Access and have been following and supporting these bills. The process of building a CA health care plan that is tailored to the people and needs of the state is going extremely well. To date there are no barriers, and anyone (GOP)who says it’s a mess is lying. It’s going to be a solid, well run, efficient, and affordable program for both people and the state. The GOP HATES that it has gotten such good reviews from health care experts and that it will both help the people who need it (Lord forbid anyone gets HELP) and will save CA millions to billions in health care costs. All their garment rending and snivveling to the contrary, this plan WORKS. I have read fewer and fewer RW diatribes about how we’re all being driven into SOCIALISM or that we will be victims of Obama’s “gulag”. So yes, progress, naysayers notwithstanding!

I have need of the police now and then. I don’t trust a one of them. You don’t know to whom you are speaking. That’s a far cry from the past when I respected the people I knew. Now – they all are potential threats to me and mine. I don’t know ANY who are “devoted” to Obama.

Hey bito – I just did the American Civic Knowledge quiz, and I am a Philosopher King (or Queen as it were). I find it odd that everyone would not be. I had Civics in 8th Grade and HS, and everyone in my classes had a basic understanding of what government was for, even as my largely Republican classmates did not always like it (they were opposed to Social Security, for example, but they were parroting their parents, I’m sure.)

Is it possible that the dumbing of Americans by dropping Civics and solid core studies around history, economics, etc. could, perhaps, be DELIBERATE? Dumb people make so much better workers bees than smart people who challenge authority based on understanding government, the Constitution, and rights. Can’t be having smart, uppity people, can we?

VERY interesting and helpful. I would add, as a sidelight, that he actually understands provincialism which is a quest most often for self determination. It might not be OUR version of autonomy. It is theirs. He gets that in ways even Palin does not because she is wedded to only HER version of what’s worth having. His ability to move back and forth throughout many communities gives him a deep appreciation for what those people want and need. Nothing wrong with that so long as it does not get generalized into a view that MY way must be YOURS. He respects local self direction AND a need for those things we all share to BE shared. Amazing mind, amazing man.
