Jesus Alou and his bothers too! We are a contentious bunch. I started political campaigning with my grandfather in the early 60s. I was five. His birthday is the same as mine, so out of about 50 grand kids, I was kinda special. He was a WW I vet and he’d just transplanted himself from West Virginia to Oklahoma to be closer to a couple of his sons,including my dad. I remember sitting in the front seat of Pop’s ’56 Chevy (white over burgundy or burgundy over white. Whatever, it was pretty) in Osage County. We were driving from the grocery store when the train crossing gates came down. We stopped. Now, a bunch of people stopped at a train crossing trapped in their cars was the perfect opportunity for Pop to hop out of his car to register democrats. He earned a quarter per registered democrat. While we were stopped, Pop got out of the car to register all the folks stopped behind us–and to campaign for them to register as democrats. He was quite a gregarious guy and I got bored. So I slid over to the driver’s seat and chucked the transmission into reverse.
