On the other hand, I’ve done my tours around the block and have always tried to be objective rather than subjective; which seems to be the order of the day with our media state-side. Literally? I trust my intuition (and some of the book larnin’); first impressions are a big deal with me. I keep telling the managers in my office that they should ask the Administrative Assistants what we think. But do they? Hell no! Today we had a new hire bale on a position he was supposed to start next Monday. We had a verbal. We’d ordered his computer, his access, and his business cards. Why did he bale? Because (in a nervous and uncomfortable voice he stated) “he accepted another position elsewhere.” Go figure; he played one side against the middle. I’m glad he blew us off — one less yahoo I need to cater to. I knew it at the time, but went with the flow regarding General McChrystal. Stan-the-Man was not a good choice. Why? Because of his demeanor, his lack of transparency, his lack of respect for our President, his look, his facial expressions, the “not-a-good-choice-neon-sign Mr. President” hanging ’round the General’s neck. Yet, along with President Obama, gave him the rope. What’s the cliche? It’s been nearly a year. At some point, any of us would let down our guard. Alcohol numbs our inhibitions and makes most of us run-at-the-mouth (oops and it isn’t even Vox Populi — sorry y’all). Now our one-drink-too-many General McChrystal and those loyal to his command, have forgotten to whom they report. Go figure and they (the White House) were gracious enough to let it appear he resigned. 😆 PS — the Tea Party is gaining exposure, my friends. Unless we do something about it (sooner rather than later FGS), we may just see a one term President. Personally, I dread the day these assholes, once again, gain a leg up. I respect PBS and NPR far beyond any other media in this country. However, just once, just once, I wish each organization would interview and ask the opinion of, those of us who are actually the “real people”, those of us who voted for Barack Obama, those of us who continue to support him, and those of us who can see beyond the shitty politics, the political obfuscating, and by far the most faux source of “news” offered 24/7. Hi! I get a lot of e-mail when I appear on PBS, but I can’t resist replying to yours. It’s always bothered me when people say there are some jobs too hard or too dirty for Americans to do. I don’t think there’s any job too hard or too dirty for Americans to do, they just want to be paid a decent wage to do it. There are lots of American coal miners. Is it surprising that American citizens have higher wage expectations than undocumented immigrants? Wendy’s could find lots of eager American workers if they were willing to pay more. But why should they if they can hire cheaper immigrant workers instead? John McCain got in trouble during the 2008 campaign when he said no American would do agricultural labor even if it paid $50 an hour. He was then deluged with requests from unemployed Americans as to where they could find those $50 an hour jobs! I tell my students I’d be happy to pick fruit or clean toilets, as long as I’m paid what I think I’m worth (like any successful lawyer with 30 years of experience). And I have the summer off, so I’m available. The Wall Street Journal on behalf of big business has advocated a constitutional amendment saying, “There shall be open borders.” Employers love cheap labor. Surprised?
