When you were Congressman Kasich, I voted for you each and every time you ran to represent Ohio’s 12th District in Washington. Seriously sir, each and every time. Why did I vote for you back then? Because you were honest, kind, compassionate, concerned, caring, and genuine; an all around nice guy, a person of character. As a registered Democrat, I believed you were the right choice for the 12th District and had the best interests of all residents at the very top of your “things to accomplish in Washington” list. That said, I would like to ask the following: What Happened to You? Seriously Governor, what happened? Moreover, how can you even sleep at night? I will not make a laundry list of the changes I have seen. Suffice it to say, you no longer resemble the person I described several paragraphs back. Now he is sticking it to public employees to make up for all the junk assets he sold to the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and other public pension funds. Seems I’m more pissed of with John Boy Kasich’s perception of what my kid does from 8 am-7 pm, M-F; weekends not included, than she is! HOWEVER, I do know, from personal experience, her students are far more important to her and come before the spouse and “the Mom.” As unprofessional as it sounds, when will WE speak out and stand up for our professional educators? When? They have Master’s degrees in Education, Literacy, and many areas which provide a “leg-up” to those passed over at the age of 3 or 4. They are educators — not babysitters. They are dedicated individuals who sincerely give a flying fig about the students who get off the bus everyday and walk through the classroom door. They care about their students as much as a registered nurse cares about his/her patients. Seriously, one must WANT to be in either profession; if one does not, one needs to make a career change. Many educators, my kid included, provide food, snacks, clothing and other essentials to their kids so they CAN LEARN for God’s sake. Last Christmas, I spent nearly $100 for two little girls whose dad walked away from the family at the beginning of December, only later to have the the only home they had ever known burn to the ground. What I contributed did not even come close to what the teacher-daughter did; not even close. Yet, these dedicated individuals are ridiculed by the uninformed and the ignorant. Maybe if parents showed up at parent/teacher conferences or the “high and mighty” spent a day or two in a classroom, professional educators would be regarded beyond being professional babysitters. Seriously y’all, all of it makes me want to throw up. I am trying to remain neutral, but it is extremely difficult. Why? Because my kid is in debt to the tune of $30K with student loans, cries when she is unable to help one of her kids, and believes she is unable to compete with the ideology of Governor John R. Kasich, an individual who CHOSE to send his twin daughters to a PRIVATE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL!!! Do I care what he does? Not really. However, when his ideology attempts to influence/dictate what happens in a public school, then as far as I am concerned, the man is out of touch with 90% of the residents of the State of Ohio. Is this fair? I think not. Please…regardless of where you are…please let him know (politely of course) that he is an asshole. Kasich’s beliefs at heart of plan Ohio, at least in modern times, has never seen a state budget like the one Gov. John Kasich proposed yesterday. The $55.5 billion, two-year spending plan is as much a social budget as a fiscal one, built on ideology as much as practicality. Kasich’s budget not only deals with how much more or less money is received by entities tethered to state funding – schools, universities, municipalities, prisons, health-care institutions – it also requires that virtually all of them do things differently. “This budget is woven with one reform after another,” Kasich told reporters. Five of the past six governors raised the income or sales taxes to plug deep budget holes. But none of them faced a budget deficit as deep as the one Kasich inherited – $8 billion – and, true to his word, his budget does not raise taxes. Instead, it balances the budget by imposing funding cuts that will put pressure on local governments and schools to ask their voters for more tax money. It counts on the cash that otherwise would have gone to local governments, plus a modest economic recovery, to produce an extra $4 billion in tax revenue to fill half the budget hole. From the day he became a candidate nearly two years ago, Kasich argued that government was too big, taxed and spent too much and was too intrusive in the affairs of business and the lives of everyday citizens. Yesterday, Kasich got his chance to do something about it. Standing at a podium on the 31st floor of the Riffe Center, he referred to the state’s loss of more than 400,000 jobs in the past five years, its high unemployment rate and crushing poverty in many counties. He said he was lucky to become governor in such a time because Ohioans are hungry for a new way. “There was so much not done, so much politics that dominated the landscape, that we have the advantage of being able to come in and be innovative and not let all this politics get in our way,” Kasich said. “Political considerations,” he added, “were not part of this budget.” His spending blueprint lends credence to that assertion. The oxen of Kasich’s political friends and foes alike are gored by it. Public-employee unions, already angry with Kasich and fellow Republicans for a soon-to-be-enacted bill restricting collective-bargaining rights, saw their ranks and clout threatened even more by the governor’s proposal to privatize five prisons, create more privately operated charter schools and roughly halve the money local governments receive to help pay for police, firefighters and other public workers. “Local governments will have no other options but to cut services and lay off workers or raise taxes to keep fire stations, hospitals and libraries open,” said Tim Burga, president of the Ohio AFL-CIO. Innovation Ohio, a new liberal research group based in Columbus, estimated that Kasich’s proposed education cuts “could add over 7,000 Ohio teachers to the unemployment lines.” But hospitals and nursing homes also take funding hits in Kasich’s budget, and newspaper publishers might lament the potential loss of legal advertising it portends. Prepared for the worst, some advocates for the poor were relieved that their funding may be retained. “I thought the cuts might be worse than they are,” said Bill Faith, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio. “We are grateful that Gov. Kasich and his team recognize that it is also an equally difficult time for the state’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks. Kasich said his budget includes reforms that will help local governments and schools cope with losses in state aid, permitting them to share services, pool health-care costs and be freed from paying union-scale wages on construction projects. The budget, in part, is a reflection of Kasich’s conservative ideology to ease regulatory oversight by calling for hefty reductions in funding for watchdog agencies such as the Environment Protection Agency, the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counse, and the Department of Natural Resources, even though they are largely funded by fees. And the budget raises questions. For instance, it permits parents to take over failing schools. Exactly how would that work? Kasich’s aides weren’t sure. Also, what control will the state retain over prisons they privatize to ensure inmates are treated humanely and to assign responsibility for disturbances and damage?
