I have a dear, dear friend and, although it is not his day-job, has a deep, story-telling-radio-voice. Years ago, he would read out loud, the personals from one of the local underground “news” papers; totally entertaining, believable, and I think any female within a 1,000 mile radius would have followed him anywhere — sight unseen — relying on the “voice” alone. Some of the work release centers were privately owned facilities operated by former prison wardens that have cashed in on the wealth of money available for housing state offenders. Today we are a different society from fifty years ago. We have come to rely upon the judgement and integrity of our lawmakers to guide us as a society as we moved into the new millennium. Because we trusted them we gave them a great amount of latitude on issues such as criminal justice and providing for our safety and well being. As a result of this misplaced trust, we now have a former President who can’t travel the world for fear he’ll be arrested as a war criminal for the acts committed in the name of the United States of America. While it’s impossible to know, some are beginning to speculate that Boehner’s penchant for turning on the waterworks might have some connection to his consumption of wine. Liberal MSNBC host Ed Shultz, half-jokingly, called Boehner a “cheap drunk” the other day, Capitol Hill aides of both parties are wondering, and there’s even a web page devoted to it.
So is drinking the issue — and why might a person struggling with drinking be more prone to weeping in public?
Speaking generally, Dr. Robert DuPont, who served as the second White House drug czar and was the first director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, tells me that “alcohol reduces inhibitions. Whatever emotion you have, you’re more likely to express it [when drinking].” DuPont added that alcohol reduces the functioning of the frontal lobes, and “the frontal lobes have to do with judgment, which is why [intoxicated] people do impulsive behavior.”
Alcohol also “brings out underlying emotions,” explains Dr. Michael Fingerhood, an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University. “It generally is unmasking what is inside them.”
