Time Out for O/T – Vol. 18

I still give you 3/4ths credit on that KQ. 😉

I think they think that TJ meant that phrase “all men are created equal” in the pro-life sense. The are equal from conception until birth, once they are born, they are on their own.

I usually like David Frums aricles/opinions, even when I disagree, I find him honest.

Poll Results: President Should Keep Campaigning on Fairness
by David Frum

Today we asked, “Is President Obama making a mistake by making “fairness” a dominant campaign theme in 2012? Vote now on Facebook!”

The results are as follows:

No: 79%
Yes: 21%

A strong majority of readers thought the President’s fairness theme was a winning message.

balconesfault: It’s not that Obama says “fairness” that often.

It’s that the word is like fingernails on the chalkboard for today’s Randian Conservatives, who don’t really believe that fairness of opportunity is important to America, much much less fairness of outcome.

If you made millions in life, be it through hard work, speculation, or inheritance, your children deserve to be born on 3rd base, and its fine if the basepath from home to first is made of quicksand. That is the natural way of things.

Breaking news: Neo-Nazi’s are now classified as a civil rights group according to FOX. Does this mean that Adolph was just a civil rights leader? Wonder if they will cover Adolph’s birthday in the future?

Again: what the hell is happening at this news channel, that they can’t distinguish between a “civil rights group” and an armed gang of white supremacists and neo-Nazis? Un-freaking-believable.

The new normal? Neo-Nazi’s are just like the Chamber of Commerce? Rotary Club?

I was thinking the same thing, that this topic has been done already using different approaches, but Bob Cesca does has some good examples and lines. Just saw Chris Christie on MSNBC (why?) and he is the epitome of “Low-Effort”, too bad they ran out time Jonathon Alter was “taking him to school.”

Low-Effort Thinking Leads to Conservatism
by Bob Cesca

One of the most-often overheard maxims of a conservative thinker is “shoot first, ask questions later.” That applies to everything. It’s simply easier to eject a response from the gut than it is to consider all of the facts surrounding an issue or social attitude. A black kid wearing a hoodie is a criminal. A gay couple is a threat because they’re don’t look like a straight couple. All Muslims are terrorists. A study conducted by a university has a far-left liberal bias.

That last one is, of course, a conservative paradox: their snap reaction is to deny that conservatives give snap reactions to complex topics. Wrap your head around that one for a few minutes. If you were to present the results of this study at face value, conservatives would absolutely object and immediately dismiss the results. But if you were to ask them about the “shoot first, ask questions later” maxim you’d probably get an affirmative response.

[…]

Over the weekend, President Obama said, “We are going to have a big and important debate in this country, and I cannot wait. This is going to be a big debate and it’s going to be a fun debate. It’s always good to have the truth on your side.” That’s fantastic, if all things were equal. But the Republicans have spent a considerable amount of effort obfuscating the truth with easy-to-read kneejerk ideas. While the president tells us (figuratively) that diet and exercise will help us live longer, the Republicans tell us to drink more shitty Brawndo because it’s got what plants crave.

This is for Cher, because I know she would post it:

Economy has grown the most when Democrats have been in power

Posted by Suzy Khimm

Earlier today, I linked to a Goldman Sachs research note arguing that the most fiscally conservative outcome in the 2012 election would be an Obama victory and Republican control of Congress. But their analysis was limited to deficit reduction. Last week, JPMorgan looked at this question using a broader lens: what happens to the economy under Democratic and Republican presidents, and Democratic and Republican Congresses?

The economy has grown the most when Democrats have been in total control of Washington. But, interestingly, it’s grown the least when there’s been a Democratic president and a GOP-controlled Congress–our current scenario. But those are precisely the political conditions under which the stock market tends to perform the best, as well as the scenario that Goldman Sachs believes would lead to the most deficit reduction in 2013.

Not only is it “What’s wrong with Kansas” when the vote against their own best interests, but it’s “What’s wrong with Wall St” when they also vote against their best interests?

Wow and she still has a job on the fair and balanced cable news network? Oh, she was “just asking” not reporting.

Fox News Anchor “Just Asking” If Obama Threatened To Kill Chelsea Clinton To Cover Up His Birth Certificate

Fox News’ Heather Childers – co-anchor of Fox & Friends First and a news anchor on America’s News HQ – was just curious, she says, as she asked yesterday for her Tweeps’ “thoughts” on the following question: Did Obama Campaign Threaten Chelsea Clinton’s Life 2 Keep Parents Silent? Childers got her “curiosity” from a post on the right-wing birther site, GodfatherPolitics.com, which raised the same question. UPDATED. (H/T John K.)

Her “just asking” tweet:

Can anyone name any “news organization” that wouldn’t can this person on the spot? And this is what the reelection will face until November? Afraid so and a good percentage of low information voters will hear and believe this crap.

Not to worry all is fine now according to Fux:

UPDATE: Mediaite (h/t Media Matters) reports that Fox Senior VP Michael Clemente has said, “The tweets have been addressed with Heather and she understands this was a mistake.”

Just asking: But didn’t heather used to perform with donkeys and German shepherds on bars along the borders of Mexico? Oh, sorry if that offended any one, I was just asking.

Interesting challenge:

Catalysts for Change: Play the Game

Around the world—from the dense urban settlements of Kibera and Dharavi to the precarious freeholds of small farmers everywhere—billions of people are looking for a way out of poverty. Everyday they face challenges ranging from shortages of water to shortages of jobs, from loss of their traditional lifestyles to loss of their voice in their communities.

What if, together, we can identify thousands of new paths out of poverty around the world in just 48 hours

Current TV has filed a countersuit against its ousted star anchor, Keith Olbermann. Read the network’s cross complaint below:

KT, most every day I I get up and say 10X’s over, ” I’m not going to bitch about the media.” That seems to last about 5 minutes (unless it’s in a commercial break then 9 minutes 😉 ) It happened again this morning. Some R spokesman was busy blaming the gas prices on PBO and saying that the price was close to two bucks when he was sworn into office and now’s it’s close to 4. When the guest Dem began to answer the blondie was all “no,no, no…. I want you to answer _______ allowing the R’s bogus answer to stand.
It’s not just the media not telling the truth, it’s not even allowing an evenhanded reply. I have been noticing this happening more and more. Ask person one question and before allowing the other side to refute it , they ask a completely different question on a completely different topic.

Khirad, If these are just the beginning ads, they are off to a good start and with all the material the R’s supplied the only problem may be enough money to pay for the TV time.

Obama campaign is up with its second campaign ad — on energy

With gas prices posing a political risk, President Obama has hit the road to tout his energy plan and now his campaign is up with a spot that the campaign says emphasizes Obama’s “historic energy accomplishments.”

The 30-second spot — which pushes back at an anti-Obama ad campaign tied to the Koch brothers — is running in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia — and mentions Mitt Romney by name.

“Under President Obama, domestic oil production’s at an eight-year high,” the ad says, featuring footage of Obama standing before oil rigs. “So why is Big Oil attacking him? Because he’s fighting to end their tax breaks. He’s raising mileage standards and doubling renewable energy. In all these fights, Mitt Romney stood with Big Oil, for their tax breaks, attacking higher mileage standards and renewables. So when you see this ad, remember who paid for it and what they want.”

The reference is to an ad campaign launched by the American Energy Alliance, which news reports have tied to Charles and David Koch, billionaire industrialists who have pledged millions to defeat Obama.

“Remember” – Obama for America 2012 Television Ad

The President has made significant progress to ensure a clean-energy future for our country, including raising mileage standards and doubling investments in renewable energy. Yet oil executives continue to attack that progress, fighting to keep their tax breaks and against investments in clean energy. While those special interest work to stop the progress we’ve made, President Obama continues to take steps to make America more energy independent and create an economy that’s built to last by out-innovating and out-building our competitors around the world.
