Time Out for O/T – Vol. 18

What a quote:

One Republican official familiar with the campaign’s thinking said it will be designed to produce a pick who is safe and, by design, unexciting – a deliberate anti-Palin. The prized pick, said this official: an “incredibly boring white guy.”

O’Donnell used to do a list on losing VP pics and their very bleak prospects on future elected office, it was close to zero and zip. They must assume Mitt is not going to win and they don’t want to see their future to vanish.

Pawlenty or Portman? Maybe Jamie Dimon? 😉

The very next day after when PBO called upon the DoJ to investigate speculation, the prices began to fall. I remember the screaming headlines and screaming talking heads on this one, you too? (snark)

May 14th, 1948.

Foundation of the State of Israel

By 1948 the British situation in Palestine, which Britain ruled under a mandate confirmed by the League of Nations in 1922, had become so impossible that the British government washed its hands of the whole Jewish-Arab imbroglio, gave up the mandate and announced that it would formally withdraw from the country at midnight on May 14th. On May 13th the British High Commissioner, General Sir Alan Cunningham, broadcast a farewell message in which he called for moderation by both Jews and Arabs to preserve peace.

So Oil has dropped below $95/barrel! Hmmm, logic says since it was President Obama’s fault that it rose so high, this fall must be President Obama’s great work that has made oil fall, right? I’m pretty sure that is how Fox news and David Gregory will report it, don’t you?

In Florida, Registering Voters A Whole New Game

Six months before the presidential election, the Florida ground game is already underway.

But in Florida this year, there are tough new restrictions on groups that conduct voter registration drives. The restrictions already appear to be having an impact on the number of people who are registering to vote.

Over the last two months, Romero and others with NCLR have registered nearly 10,000 Hispanic voters in Miami-Dade County.

This is work the group has done before, but this year, registering a voter has become more time-consuming and exacting than in the past. Each canvasser now must first register with the state. And groups must turn in completed forms within 48 hours — rather than the 10 days available previously — or they’ll face significant penalties.

Although the new rules have been in effect less than a year, University of Florida political scientist Daniel Smith says its clear they’re already having an impact.

An analysis he did that was built upon by The New York Times shows that in the first eight months the law was in effect, 81,000 fewer new voters were added to the registration rolls compared to the same period four years earlier.

The Romney/Ryan plan.
Austerity didn’t work the last time, so let’s try it some more. However, I have to admit, Greece has so many problems, it’s hard to tell what would work.

One thing I do know, the RW trying to compare the Greek economy with the US economy is pure fantasy, there is no comparison at all. their debt is to outside banks (a separate discussion)and their economy is only 2.2% of the EuroZone, not exactly a world power, more like Indiana going bankrupt.

Q&A: Greek debt crisis

Will it work?

That is the 130bn-euro question. The aim is to cut the Greek government’s debt from 160% of GDP to 120% of GDP by 2020.

Despite the austerity measures taken so far, the Greek government still spends more than it receives in taxes.

Some economists and Greek unions say the plan is doomed to fail. They argue that by making people poorer the measures will simply shrink the Greek economy, reducing tax revenues and increasing the deficit.

But EU leaders argue that there is no choice, that spending needs to fall even if it hurts the economy in the short term.

Furthermore, they argue that increasing competitiveness, by lowering wages for example, will attract business to Greece and thereby boost the economy and taxes

Surveillance Drone Spotted Near Chicago – For NATO Summit?

This was filmed in Elgin, Illinois about 40 miles from Chicago. I assume it’s for the NATO summit this week as a security measure.

Real or not, it’s sorta creepy to me.

Why is then Stormfront in Sacramento now, C’Lady? Do they have a particular grievance that concerns them right now? I thought they had little to nada dealings with government or am I mistaken? I can’t keep all the hate groups straight.

When I read that arms and ammo sales were rapidly increasing on the SPLC site because of Obama, I thought I was reading an old blog from 2009, guess not, eh? they seem to need to keep fear/hate alive even though PBO signed one bill on guns in his first term which actually relaxed gun control.
Sometimes I think that the leaders of these hate groups are also owners of gun & ammo shops, spreading fear is like cheap advertising for them and a real money maker.

» Posted By bito On May 13, 2012 @ 10:40 pm

Well right off I see your problem, C’Lady you show respect to LGBT people and consider them human beings.

Beyond the aspect of threats, those letters must be a howl to read. Strange, strange people that have chosen other peoples sex lives as some sort of enemy.

You cursing AB? Oh my image is destroyed of you, what ever shall I do? 😆 😆

It is total bull shit, AB. He is making an in-kind donation to a Republican front group and he is being used as a fund raiser. Of course IMO he is also showing his true colors, he has always seemed to throw softballs to the Republicans on MTP and his staff schedules Republicans 70+% of the time.

( look at the header, a little something for you. If any of “the kids” want to write something, I will spotlight it in the header.)

That’s why I brought up KO, it was fairly recent and it also involves NBC. Should we just let it go with a “well, that’s the way it is …” or object to it?

Romney Candidacy Boosted By Falsehoods And Distortions

In his first two years, Obama got everything he wanted, but his economic policies failed. In truth, Republicans threatened to filibuster 80% of Democratic initiatives in the Senate in 2009. Entrenched opposition from “the party of no” crippled many necessary economic steps……

Hey funk, do the bean counters have to do an audit on which one buys the most ad time before they decide on which headline to use? Remember the days of independent news departments? It was lost when CBS pulled the expose on tobacco because of new investors soon everyone followed. Sad, sad year.

Anyone know the card game called “Bullshit”? Well, I’m calling major “Bullshit” on this one!

NBC’s David Gregory To Headline Conference For Major Republican Advocacy Group

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), which calls itself “the voice of small business,” is one of the Republican party’s strongest allies. The group spent over $1 million on outside ads in the 2010 campaign — all of it backing Republican House and Senate candidates (and, Bloomberg News reported last month, “another $1.5 million that it kept hidden and said was exempt” from disclosure requirements). The group is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit against the Obamacare law and bankrolled state governments’ challenges to the law. The NFIB has also taken stances against allowing the EPA to regulate greenhouse gases, opposing regulations on businesses, and supporting curtailing union rights.

And which one of these rules should he be fired/disciplined under?

The Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics states:

Journalists should:
— Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
— Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
— Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.

What was KO disciplined for? A lot less than this, he’s keynoting a Republican event and they are using him to raise funds. Can you trust him even less?

Anyone want to join me in calling “Bullshit?”

k’es, I think Matthews came prepared for Tonie this time, his staff did an excellent job. I don’t think he likes Perkins and I do know he likes Barney.

I have always heard that Tonie’s group was on the “Hate List” ( I can’t find an actual list on SPLC) and often wondered why have such a hate monger on the tubes all the time.

Here is some scary stuff

Hate groups topped 1,000 for the first time since the Southern Poverty Law Center began counting such groups in the 1980s. Anti-immigrant vigilante groups, despite having some of the political wind taken out of their sails by the adoption of hard-line anti-immigration laws around the country, continued to rise slowly. But by far the most dramatic growth came in the antigovernment “Patriot” movement — conspiracy-minded organizations that see the federal government as their primary enemy — which gained more than 300 new groups, a jump of over 60%.

Taken together, these three strands of the radical right — the hatemongers, the nativists and the antigovernment zealots — increased from 1,753 groups in 2009 to 2,145 in 2010, a 22% rise. That followed a 2008-2009 increase of 40%.

That would put the increase at the same time as The President began his campaign.

food, I found this article that agrees and elaborates on your comment:

Republicans Cement Their Reputation as Enemies of the American People

http://www.politicususa.com/republicans-cement-reputation-enemies-american-people.html

A reputation is a ubiquitous, unprompted and a fairly efficient contrivance of social control in society, and there is little a group or person can do
to change society’s perception of them unless they alter their behavior drastically over a period of time. Republicans have earned a reputation as inhumane oligarchs who have contempt for the poor, the unemployed, seniors, and especially President Obama. On Thursday, House Republicans did what they do best and secured their well-earned reputation as contemptible sycophants of Randian philosophy and enemies of the American people.

In order to override steep cuts to the Pentagon mandated in last summer’s debt reduction deal, they decided that instead of bringing in new revenue coupled with defense spending cuts, it would be better to eliminate crucial programs that provide aid for the poor and consumer protections that affect all Americans. The cuts are tantamount to taking food out of the mouths of children, eliminating healthcare assistance for women, and eliminating food delivery for sick seniors.

It does seem ludicrous and he needs to be asked how he balances the budget and reduce the debt with this plan. I would love to hear how the ‘other Mitt’ answers that. His economic plan is a bit Raygunesque. “I promise I will cut taxes, rebuild the military and balance the budget!” and all with out the use of drugs? ( Old Doonesbury on Rayguns first press conference)

Not to take anything away from Tamron, Ratigan used to do almost weekly, but then he has to keep up his “big Billy Bluff” image, so has Larry O’Donell. Of course then there is Bill-o “cut off his mike” O Really. It has to be used judicially, and Ms. Hall did.

Via our news feed:
Tens of thousands march in Spain over austerity

MADRID (AP) — Tens of thousands of Spaniards angered by grim economic prospects and the political handling of the international financial crisis turned out for street demonstrations in the country’s cities Saturday, marking the one-year anniversary of a movement that inspired similar pressure groups in other countries.

…..

“I’m here to defend the rights that we’re losing and for the young people who have it so tough,” 57-year-old middle school teacher Roberto Alonso said. “They’re better educated than ever. But they don’t have work. They don’t have anything. They’re behind and they’ll stay that way.”

….

The protesters called for governments to enact a host of measures, including a global tax on financial transactions and more democratic international financial bodies.

fc, You are exactly right, the past week in the house has been a complete waste of time. They have been passing bills that attempt to get around the non agreement and consequences of the “super committee.” Ha what a joke. The agreement, remember had to have both some safety net cuts and DoD cuts, instead the just cut the safety net, severely and gave the military more money. See: https://planetpov.com/2011/12/01/time-out-for-ot-vol-18/comment-page-1/#comment-182704

So you are exactly right calling them liars and not trustworthy to uphold the agreement that the ambushed in the first place.
