The purpose of the Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown Special Opportunities Fund LLC was to serve “as placement agent for private equity offerings, being actively involved in venture capital, merchant banking, private equity investments, financial advisory services, asset management and other activitie […] And here’s the kicker: This particular fund is unregulated by the SEC, is not public, and was exempt from all regulatory activity. The doorway to the investment had to be offshore to keep it out of the United States regulatory umbrella. Put it this way: Has there ever before been a major presidential candidate who had a multimillion-dollar Swiss bank account, plus tens of millions invested in the Cayman Islands, famed as a tax haven? [….] And that is precisely why voters have a right to know that truth. Elections are, after all, in part about the perceived character of the candidates — and what a man does with his money is surely a major clue to his character. One more thing: To the extent that Mr. Romney has a coherent policy agenda, it involves cutting tax rates on the very rich — which are already, as I said, down by about half since his father’s time. One, is just how many are there exactly? And two, which I find both very curious and potently disturbing and that is that he has actual companies in Bermuda. Not just bank accounts but corporations in his name that he has used in leveraged buyouts. Are they still active and who are they doing business with? Dictators? Terrorists, Iran? China, N. Korea….? Perhaps none of the above, we just don’t know. Off shore accounts aren’t just set up a tax shelters, they are set up to conduct business with out any US regulations bothering them.
