Time Out for O/T – Vol. 18

Let’s look at these West Coast states. Even though they’re still voting in California, obviously Obama is going to win it (55). And equally obviously, he’s going to win Washington (12) and Oregon (7), where neither side even bothered to spend a dime. Throw in Hawaii (4). Those 78 votes haul Obama up to 260. That’s something to keep in mind for election night: Whatever Obama’s number is at 10 pm Eastern, add those 78 EV’s—they’re a mortal lock, and a hefty insurance policy. If he wins Nevada (6) and Colorado (9), it’s over.

In other words, Obama can lose the big Eastern four—Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida: all of ’em!—and still be reelected.

Obama Administration Awards Large Title X Grants To Defunded Planned Parenthood

The Obama administration has awarded generous new federal family planning grants to Planned Parenthood (PP) in three states where funding was cut by Republican legislators after they gained control of the House in 2010. The states that will receive the grant money are New Jersey, Tennessee and North Carolina.

[….]

North Carolina will get $426,000 from the Title X grant, almost three times more than they were getting from the state before they were cut off. As a result, they will now be able to expand services to include men and grow teen counseling programs. The New Jersey Family Planning League (NJFPL) received $3.1 million in federal funding for PP clinics and Tennessee was awarded $395,000 per year for the next three years.

[…]

Paige Johnson, a spokesperson for a Planned Parenthood clinic in Durham, revealed that they have never had to utilize HHS for Title X grants until now. The clinic was forced to turn to HHS as a result of the state’s halt on funding. Under federal law, HHS is required to award grants in an effort to grow women’s access to affordable health care in areas where women need it most.

This has more to do with their mutual Wall St. buddies than guns, waaay more. Ms. Warren believes and fought for mortgages that don’t blow up in your face, Brown and Bloomberg think their just fine, buyer beware. The gun topic is a complete ruse!

k’es, the British press has been having a field day with Mitt and his advisers the last few days and there have been some shining examples of that “British wit” by some of them. They are doing a better job vetting him there than our own “fair and balanced” press, afraid to say what is obvious about Mitt.

With the banksters Libor Scandal and the HSBC money laundering scandal going on, I can understand why they are attempting to keep a low profile. That and the MP’s also warned Barclay’s about donating to Mitt: From Kalima’s Morning Blog MPs tell Barclays to stop fundraising for Mitt Romney

What I can’t understand is why Mitt is meeting with them, it only makes him look worse.

Watching this speech, I am reminded that the young Mr. Obama could have easily taken another path, the easier and more lucrative path, when he graduated from law school at the top of his class. He could have become a highly paid lawyer at a big Wall St. firm bringing down the big bucks, instead he decided to work with the economically disadvantaged on the South Side of Chicago and he didn’t HAVE too. He chose that path and most assuredly it wasn’t the easy path to the White House! He shared lives with those less fortunate. He lived a middle class life and knows the struggles of the daily lives that millions of Americans know and share.

Is there any comparison with Willard Mitt Romney?

“We recognise the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation, that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage,”

“But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals. That they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities.”

The quote from the Daily Beast was:

Romney said changing the gun laws won’t “make all the bad things go away” when asked about the deadly shooting in Colorado that left 12 dead and 58 injured.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2012/07/25/romney-holmes-had-illegal-weapons.html

No, but making clips that allow a madman to shoot more than 10 shots at a time would save many lives. And that was a law until the NRA “feared” the Congress into letting it expire! Had the law still been in effect the killers in Tucson and Colorado would have had to stop and reload.

Looks like this adviser to Mitt shares the same values.

Mitt Romney would restore ‘Anglo-Saxon’ relations between Britain and America

In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.

“He is naturally more Atlanticist”.

Translation: Will get the black man out of our White House.

Here’s the kicker:

The advisers spoke on the condition of anonymity because Mr Romney’s campaign requested that they not criticise the President to foreign media. After another adviser criticised Mr Obama in a German magazine last month, the President sharply instructed them that “America’s political differences end at the water’s edge”.

So they can say anything they want, including racially coded comments, you just can’t use your name?

Who do the NRA represent? It appears it’s not their members nor gun owners.

5 Issues That Divide Gun Owners and NRA Leadership
The NRA’s membership agrees with most Americans that our gun laws should protect our families, not the financial interests of a clique of elites.

The list, for details and poll numbers please see the article.

1. Gun Show Loophole
Currently, in over 30 states, one can walk into a local gun show and purchase a weapon from a “private seller,” who does not have to conduct any kind of background check. For example, a .50 caliber sniper rifle, which can take down a helicopter.

2. Terror Gap
If you are put on the U.S. terror watch list you cannot board an airplane. You can, however, still purchase guns and explosives.

3. Tiahrt Amendments
These amendments, attached to federal spending bills, do their best to severely limit law enforcement’s ability to access, use and share data that helps them enforce federal, state and local gun laws.

4. Reporting Lost and Stolen Guns
DUH!

5. Sharing Records With National Instant Background Check System (NICS)
Besides closing the gun-show loophole (see #1), it also sought to fix a huge problem in the current federal background check system–a lax attitude by many states and some federal institutions in sharing records of those ineligible to buy firearms due to criminal record or mental health defects.
(For example, Seung-Hui Cho, the mass murderer at Virginia Tech and Jared Loughner.)

http://www.alternet.org/story/156416/5_issues_that_divide_gun_owners_and_the_nra_leadership/?page=entire

Not a one of these would do harm do responsible gun owners nor harm the Second Amendment and all of them would pass the last SCOTUS decision on guns, yet the NRA still opposes each and everyone of these, why? Because they would lose their grip of fear on congress and the American people.

Excellent Nirek! Or how about fees, Mitt was big on fees (hidden/user tax) when he was governor. Set the fees on guns and ammo at a level that pays all costs for background checks, investigation, trial and incarceration for every gun crime whether it be local, state or federal. Why should the majority of people that do not own guns have to pay for their hobby and mistakes?

Heard today that the estimate for legal gun sales made without a background check is around 40%! That’s a whole bunch of guns!

KT, you have to look at the context, this was in the very early 50’s when you could buy a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk with the change you now just carry around in your pocket. My father was teen during the depression and he knew what a dollar meant and could buy. Having a hole in your pocket and losing a quarter when he was a kid wold have meant missing a meal, thus change purses.
