If I were in that situation I’d collect the unemployment benefits and in the meantime paint as much pictures to sell as I could. In this way you’d have some security to pull of your sales on a larger scale. And, you could also open a sign shop on your own. Since there is going to be one less you could open a new small one-man business. But I think it would be best to go for your real calling, which (according to my opinion, that is) would be painting. Nowadays it’s quite good to sell via web too, besides exhibitions. As kesmarn said: you may be surprised how well you will do.
Moreover, if I remember correctly, you had several offers from users here to organize exhibitions in their respective places.
