I have done it many times when I was a kid. My folks thought nothing of piling us in the ole Oldsmobile and driving to New York. My mom was born in Albany. But my grandson has not had that privilege. I think next year we will give him the choice, cross country or Hawaii. He surfs already so I think I know which he will pick. He is going to DC in the spring though so he will get some culture. I see rape going back to the days when a woman’s past was put on trial in order to attempt to bring a rapist to justice. And many times the jury paid more attention to the past of the victim than to the heinous crime of the defendant. This is one big sore spot with me so I am not always rational on the subject. My Friend was raped by a family member on her father’s side of the family and instead of dealing with the issue, they forced her to get an abortion and threatened her with dire consequences if she told. Well guess what? She told as soon as she turned 18 and I was right there with her. I did not even know until she was nearing 18 what had happened. She found out she had a good support system, other family members and friends and they also stood by her in telling her story. The family member finally received 10 years in prison and he deserved them all. She is now part of our family because her parents disowned her rather than admit the uncle was a bastard. When you are on the right side you know it. She was lucky that there was a good DA who was willing to listen and investigate her case. It was not hard to verify the abortion. Nor was it hard to determine she did not give permission since she was only 11 when she had the abortion.
