This isn’t about the kids that are growing up on the farm and know how to protect themselves from equipment and fertilizers. (Although I can tell you many sad accidents that happened around farms when I was growing up.) The corporate farm is a different environment. They hire illegals and could care less of about the working conditions. Sure make it legal to hire children and we will be back to the orphans, foster children, and the less fortunate working for a roof over their head and all the bruised raw vegetables and fruit they can eat. I love reading the comments from people saying that kids should be out there working to learn how to work and not be lazy. But, do you think those grown ups would do it? My father hired kids every summer to pull weeds out of the soy bean fields. They did not pull weeds if the field had been sprayed. They worked hard and they were paid. They had a lunch break and if it got too hot, they were told to stop. They worked only 5 hours. But, they did not have to sleep and eat there. They got to go home to their families at night. Some showed up the next day and some did not. How much they learned, who knows. But, I am sure manual labor wasn’t something they were going to strive for. There is a difference between family farming and corporate farming. I think that Zimmerman was looking for a situation that would make him look heroic or someone the police should consider for a position. I don’t own a gun but I fear now for the first time that I don’t. For now I rely on two large dogs.
