I think this is very true now as then and why we are disappointed with our politicians. Yes, they wanted freedom of the press but they also wanted control of it, too. Sedition Act for one. However, there have always been those that remind them that the main purpose was to keep it free and even to fight to maintain it. But, journalism has always been a tool for those in power or seeking power. By no means do I wish to challenge you, certainly I would lose, but I must make a statement in regard to Mr. Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was a brilliant man but he was a man seeking power and desire for his opinions to be just. I know he was one of our founders and he has been raised to heights of goddly. But, he was a man with faults, too. He used journalism and the press for his own purpose just as it is used today. Of course, he did not have the volume of it as we have now. There is a wonderful book titled “A Magnificent Catastrophe” written by Edward J. Larson about the election of 1800 which gave birth to our now two party system and etched the lines of partisanship we live with today. Of course this was the contest between two of our founders, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. If you read this book, you will see that nothing really has changed in politics. It took off in a run that even our founders couldn’t control. (In fact, in reading it I caught myself laughing at the similarities of some of the methods used today and even the topics. Especially the use of religion.) Jefferson played the game and he played it well. I do not mean to take away from your article, AdLib, but I do feel that there always need to be someone to say, “Our Founding Fathers were on the right track but they were men and didn’t always know the way down the road.” We need to study them and learn the truth of their desires for our nation. I find it somewhat irronic that we can have a “do not resuscitate document”, often called a “living will” and it is a binding legal document that states resuscitation should not be attempted if a person suffers cardiac or respiratory arrest. This right is granted us or someone we leave in charge to make the decision on our behalf. The doctor can not be brought up on charges for not keeping you alive. Why can’t we have the same rights over our bodies when suffering intense prolonged pain and the possible humiliation of dementia and loss of control of bodily functions? Isn’t a “living will” a right to die contract? So, the doctor not keeping you going is legal but helping you go from your pain and suffering is. I find that irronic. I know religion beliefs would find the exceptions but why do I have to follow those if I don’t so believe? Again they take away the right of choice but they don’t want that “big government”. I was responding to that comment’s last line that where it is said that she will go down in history because she was working for him. I also said I wasn’t taking anything away from him but I felt she shouldn’t have anything taken away from her, too. She has earned a place in history on her own skirt hems, herself. He appointed her to the position and she accepted it and has done it very well. It is not like being in a Southern Bapist Church and standing up and admitting to going dancing on Saturday night. (trust me, don’t ever do that!)
The MSM has only one thing on their mind and that is ratings. We are the source of those ratings. On the internet, they are looking for hits and the more, the more corps will pay to advertise on that site. So, here is where that all mighty dollar comes into play again.
Personally, I find that this world has come to expect and even desire the negative more than the positive. The highest rated news programs are on FOX. Scare tactics work with a lot of people because too many people are angry and not happy with their personal situation. So, they will believe what they hear, even if it is wrong, because they are looking for a reason for their feelings. They won’t search out the other side because they don’t want to hear different. MSNBC trys very hard to be that otherside. But, all that are going to listen to them are the ones that already know that FOX is wrong.
So, where does that leave us. With ourselves. And, that might not be a good place.
I try to listen to FOX but I can’t. I watch MSNBC to see what they found wrong in FOX’s reporting. And, to hear the comments from the guys that I feel are more in my thinking. But, I do not always agree with them, so, I look things up on the internet.
I don’t always agree with the President and in fact, I disagree with his position on several things. But, I will vote for him again because the otherside would definitely not be to my liking. I just hope that the next 4 years, the President will be more like the guy I voted for in 2008. I feel he might be because he will no longer be running for money needed for his next campaign. That he has nothing to lose in campaign dollars, so, he will do the things that are more progressive. Of course, he will need help from the Democrats in Congress and we will need more seated there.
I guess this was a lot of typing to just say, I love a good argument among friends, whomever they are. I just wish that people would try to educate themselves better and not rely on someone to do their thinking for them. But, that would be another article, I guess.
