At least, I haven’t. My father died when I was 25. He was quite a bit older than my mother. I tell everyone whose parents are still alive, how lucky they are. In Washington DC a one-bedroom condo in a decent lower-middle class neighborhood is about $200,000. A one-bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood in Silver Spring, MD (a suburb of DC) is about $1400 per/mo (usually doesn’t include utilities). So no, I guess a teacher wouldn’t be considered “poor”. However, if a teacher is a divorced or single parent trying to raise kids she’s pretty close to that poverty line. But why are teachers and the working class even at issue? The working class didn’t bankrupt this country. The bankers and Wall Street did. Living for the City

As a black American who is somewhat politically aware and have been since the early 70’s, (before that I lived in la la land thanks to my parents), I think my frame of reference may be different. I became critically aware of the USA’s foreign policies toward peoples of color throughout the world. In those days, my focus was on people of color. So all my ‘la la land’ indoctrination went out the window. Oh, I know my parents thought they were protecting me. If I didn’t know the ‘real deal’ it would cause me less heartache. They forgot that each generation asks a few more questions and seeks more answers than the previous one. On an even more personal level, someone once asked me “do you love America”? I thought ‘OH GOD’, not the “DO YOU LOVE AMERICA QUESTION.” I answered it this way: America is my home. I have never lived in another country although I visited other countries. Sometimes I feel as a wife who is in an abusive relationship must feel – not a horribly abusive one – just a quick smack upside the head every now and again one. The black experience is just so different. I doubt that you physically wince if you see a cop smack a white guy upside the head. You might get angry and disgusted, but that’s different from wincing. Every time I see a black man on the ground face down, hands behind his back and cops beating and kicking him, that old wound hurts enough to make me wince. I found it most interesting during Katrina when I heard some white folks say they didn’t know that kind of poverty existed in America. Really? Or were they lying? Now, when I see the poverty in the deep south, in the cities, in Appalachia I ask myself that question – Do You Love America? Or when I see foreign policy based on oil or mineral rights at the expense of human dignity, I ask myself that question. Is this the best country in the world? This is my home. I do love much about my home.
