While talking to the insurance agent, I asked him what would my husband and I have to pay for a decent plan if we didn’t have insurance through my husband’s employer. It was over $600 a month for me because I take a couple of medications. It was off the charts for my husband, because he has had a heart attack and a mild stroke. Odds are according to the agent, my husband would be hard pressed to find a company who would insure him. Seniors would NEVER be able to afford complete coverage. This couple owned their home and he was a small business owner. This was a good couple. The wife had a lovely garden and was a stay at home Mom. The daughter got addicted to crack during the height of the crack epidemic in the 90’s. I don’t have any details about what went on in that house. We were neighbors, but did not socialize. The daughter who was in her late 20’s or early 30’s would leave home and return at will. Every time she came back she would steal something when she left. This girl stole her parents blind. This was not a young couple – they were in their late 50’s. The man worked for everything he had. Finally, he said “no more” and would not let her come back home unless she was willing to go into treatment. She was unwilling. Eventually, she was found dead in another part of town. Sad story. But you know what? Both the father and mother felt they did absolutely every thing they could have done for their daughter. In one middle school, the Vice Principal was fierce. There were NO kids wandering in the halls between classes. You could hear a pin drop in the cafeteria. If a teacher or a sub sent a kid to the office their parent was called. She didn’t take any crap from the kids. The kids were disciplined and the teachers knew that this was expected. At another school the Principal and VP were never visible. The kids were in the halls all the time. I smelled weed coming from somewhere in the school – I think the basement. Kids cursed in front of teachers or any other adult who happened to be in the halls. I hate to say it, but it was a zoo. The principal was old and I really think he was just counting the days to his retirement. When administrators don’t set the standards, teachers have a really difficult time. Yes, I’ve seen parents whom I really wanted to smack upside their heads. They defend the bad behavior of their child instead of holding the child responsible. But remember, in some cases these parents were kids when they had their children, or they are so busy climbing the corporate ladder they don’t have time for their kids or they’re so busy with their own social lives they don’t give the kids the guidance they need. When I first retired, I decided that I would substitute. Wow, did I have culture shock. I taught in schools that were in middle class and poor neighborhoods and were ethnically diverse. Many parents, whatever the class or color need parenting classes. It seems that the TV and video games are raising too many kids. » Posted By Sabreen60 On March 30, 2011 @ 4:24 pm I know the Republicans ‘live’ to bash public education, but they never mention what happened to the system over the last 40 years. Education has been and is on the chopping block in most states. I have friends who are teachers and they do great work. However, they must pay for many supplies from their own pockets. If they don’t have the money then the children go without. Also, when the “track” system was eliminated children with varying degrees of learning abilities were lumped together. For good or bad this made teaching more complicated. In many schools children born with mental issues because of addicted parents were placed with other children. Schools simply didn’t have the funds to provide help for these kids. Classes are crowded and far too many parents stand on the sidelines. There’s enough blame to go around. But there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to place the undue amount of blame that is currently placed on teachers. Public education CAN work. The school administration is key. I’ve substituted in schools that had administrators who were activity involved with their school and it made a world of difference. I’ve also worked in schools where the administrator was missing in action and the students were practically running the school.
