Not deep, but an upshot of my “take”, admittedly ill-informed as it may be: the current wave of Middle-Eastern/North African populist movements for democracy (or at least for more accountability of governments and rulers) is good; not knowing who will come to the fore as leaders once the dust settles is bad. Lybia is a case in point: it’s not clear which parties are “rebels”, and if a significant number are former supports of/henchmen for Gaddafi, I don’t imagine that they have visions of democracy dancing in their heads…and, frankly, they could be far worse than, say, the dreaded Muslim Brotherhood which, after all is said and done, isn’t of one piece. I actually support the air strikes to disable Gaddafy’s military airforce, but only becauase they were approved by both the League of Arab States and the United Nations; that said, I don’t think that the U.S. should do significantly more (e.g., send in ground troops) as we’re already embroiled in two expensive hot hostilities (i.e., Afghanistan and Iraq). If, for example, more military muscle from abroad is both needed and desired by Lybian rebels in order to topple Gaddafi, I would prefer France, Qatar and others do that work instead. Unsatisfactory. One of the best scenes, however, was Barb’s driving up in her sweet little “I-don’t-haul-groceries-or-children-anymore” car and taking the women off with the top down and their hair blowing. Significant was were they sat, as later reflected in the flash-forward. I would add, however, that one of the few times I felt compassion for Nikki was her declared admission that she’s mean, spiteful and jealous…and Barb’s response, “Well, duh”, was pitch-perfect. I don’t know where you live, but there are often pubs (as opposed to bars…I feel there’s a distinction, but don’t ask me what it is ;o) attached to microbreweries, and it’s worth going in to sample taste their wares with a friend or two one evening. You can also find decent affordable stouts and porters (personally, I don’t care for the thin stuff–forgot what it’s called & am too lazy to Google–except, I admit, Heiniken) in some grocers (think Sam Adams). In any event, find a beer affectionado and have them “show you around”. Contrary to your past hope, I couldn’t see SA “leading the way” on (what is for all practical purposes) a military assault against Gaddafi. As for “Holy War”, the US/Allied forces aren’t (explicitly) agressive for their own interests (e.g., war on terror, securing energy, etc.)–I’m assuming, I hope correctly, that they are seen by many on the ground in Lybia as signaling support for the popular revolt and Gaddafi’s outster. Whether Gaddafi goes (more likely than not) and democracy follows (rather doubtful, IMHO) remains to be seen. Hateful words often procede hateful deeds…that’s why the “expression” of burning crosses is such a menance: it basically means, “We’re thinking you should be dead/maimed/what-have-you”. To continue with your position, I would say that it’s also just a matter of time before those freedom-loving, gun-tottin’, RW rally attenders shoot someone in the bum, or worse. As for California, given the explicit fear of “those people” (i.e., Latinos and Muslims) threatening “our way of life” (i.e., white Christian), it’s surprising, to my mind, that more anti-Asian expression hasn’t come to the fore. Perhaps, then, it isn’t being reported or is underreported? (I know, for example, that there was quite “a thing” about signs in Chinese characters, etc., even when an English translation was present…it was discussed in academic circles, esp. law, but it wasn’t in the mainstream press, (at least not outside of California as far as I could tell).) The other issue is also, of course, integration…and how that affects both perceptions of racism and the willingness to address it. Upshot: Really, people can be insanely, insanely hateful.
