I think waitressing is probably one of the hardest ‘professions’ imaginable. As to tipping, I have a couple of rules of thumb… With 15% of the bill as a standard, if the place is busy and I get great service (maybe rushed, but complete), I tip double. If the place is not busy and I get OK service, I tip standard. If the place is dead and I get bad service, I tip a nominal two bits, just to let ’em know I didn’t forget. Not her fault. » Posted By PocketWatch On March 24, 2011 @ 4:33 pm AdLib – I was raised Catholic and spent my formative years in parochial school. Even thought of being a priest for a while. I say that in order to bring up a couple of things. First, even back then, I never really bought into the “original sin” idea. It never made any sense to me. And, since THAT didn’t compute, I questioned a LOT of dogma. The result was that I came to the conclusion (after actually reading the Bible, which Catholics back then were not encouraged to do, believe it or not) that much of the dogma and ritual was wholly man-made and not dictated in the “users’ manual.” Later, when I looked at a lot of other religions, I found the same thing… the basis is good, but all the ritual and man-made ‘enhancements’ surrounding them simply did not resonate to me. I find that taking the totality of something like the Bible or the Torah or any other originating text is a much better idea than pulling out this or that phrase and generating all sorts of additional ideas around it. So, while I recognize everyone’s right and privilege to believe what they wish, my stance is to live and let live, and, as long as someone doesn’t try to make me live in their world, they are welcome to it. They are: 1. Tax cuts help ‘the economy.’ 2. Deregulation helps ‘the economy.’ 3. Privatization is cheaper and more efficient, therefore it helps ‘the economy.’ Let’s debunk each in turn. 1. There is absolutely NO historical evidence that tax cuts grow the economy. CBO reports going back 50 years show that as soon as the Reagan tax cuts became effective, the GDP flatlined around 2.5% and hasn’t changed much since. Alan Greenspan has admitted in sworn testimony to Congressional committees that tax cuts for the rich return a negative 20% to the economy. (20 cents on every dollar of tax cuts literally disappear and no one knows what happens to those funds). 2. Savings & Loans in the 90’s and now banks and insurance companies …. need I say more? 3. I challenge ANYONE to name any effort, program, or initiative of local, state, or federal government that was privatized that became cheaper or more efficient or both.

I know next to nothing about cat psychology, and it’s a challenge to understand what goes through their pointy little heads sometimes. Dogs… I’ve got that down. One thing is that with dogs, as soon as you punish them, they instinctively come to you for comfort, and a big mistake many people make is to stay mad at them and push them away. Worst thing you can do. The real bond and trust comes from giving them that comfort once the punishment is over.
