There is a chain of lakes in Wisconsin that is in the watershed of one third of the states rivers, the Fox and the Wolf. Lake Winnebago is the largest, and there are several more connected to Winnebago (that big lake south of Green Bay you can see on any map). These are shallow lakes, no more than 20-30 feet deep at any point currently. Back when, these lakes were not really lakes, but wetlands and marshes. When they dammed the two rivers for industry, the lake levels rose, and all the water plants that were adapted to very shallow waters uprooted. It got so bad they had to dynamite the mats of plants that collected against the bridges in Oshkosh to get the water moving again. The state lost tens of thousands of acres of wetlands, habitat for all sorts of critters and a natural filter system for the rivers. As a member of a local rod & gun club, I have spent many a day in the spring in a boat, up to my shoulders in freezing water planting wild rice and other shallow water plants in those lakes to try and bring back some sort of habitat for ducks and so on. So, you can see that whether algae blooms and extra nutrients cause havoc, or higher water causes loss of habitat, we should not screw with Mother Nature. It should be that, in the case of Florida, that any water that goes into the watershed should be at least as clean as the watershed itself. Only makes sense. I get to rib them a little bit, and sympathize with the trainee. Again, I’m always alone, so I can take my time and I’m pretty easy. I was in the north of France for a few weeks on business years ago, and was staying at an inn that had a 3-star restaurant. I speak no French, and they had no English. I had my phrasebook and definitely packed my patience. Once I figured out that they would make me anything I wanted because I was staying there (if I could figure out how to order it), I would usually order a carafe of wine and try to get the waiter to understand that I needed some time to figure out how to order.
