Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

Aussies and Kiwis are brothers and sisters, they all carry a big spoon and ‘take the piss’ out of each other. Chat rooms, where the two hang out, are usually PG rated, or should be. The jokes are funny as, and no one takes offence. Get them together and let a POM (Brit) enter the mix, and the stirring gets serious. More than one “Yank” has been seen to type: “I thought you guys were friends!?!?” They are, honestly! For every Kiwi/sheep joke there is an equally obscene Aussie Bushie joke.

It can be a serious culture shock for Americans. One needs a very thick skin and an active funny bone to survive until acclimatised.

My first lesson in speaking “Strine” was a shocker. Australians have a different meaning for the word ‘Root’. Had been in the country a few days, was a few of my husbands mates over to meet the new wife. One bloke asked me if I was a Football fan (meaning soccer). Being a Yank, I’m thinking gridiron, so replied… “Oh yes! I root for the Dallas Cowboys”! The whole lot of them howled with laughter! When they eventually picked themselves up off the floor, one of them says to me: “Oh Yeah? The whole team?!? Do they pay well”? Then someone called me “Debbie” and I understood too well the meaning of the word in my new home. I wore the Debbie bit for months.

An Aussie barracks for his/her team. Still haven’t figured that one out.

Might I use OT to introduce myself? I am a 60+ disabled pensioner, with a whole lot of pent up opinionated attitude. Dual USA/Aussie, reaping the benefits of the same kind of ‘socialised’ single payer health care system that Progressives tried to secure for the people of the USA.

My view of Politics in the USA is from outside of its borders, through the eyes of both an ExPat, and the world as it is affected by USA Policies and economics. I know my history, when I can remember it. I do have ‘here-fer’ syndrome (WTF did I come in here fer?)

My disability limits ability to sit at a keyboard and to type, most typing being done with an on-screen keyboard, and mouse resting on the arm of a reclining chair. (My body is paying me back for too much fun in early life)

As a relative newcomer to Australia (10+ years), not having earned the right to the care and income so readily provided by this Awesome Country, I became a volunteer Indie Music promoter, helping up and coming Au/NZ Indie Musos become tax paying citizens so that the pension system remains healthy, and collecting the most awesome FREE CD library (mostly personalised) you ever saw! LG, Life is good.

But over in the old country life sux for my kids, grand-kids, great-grand-kids, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. There is little that I can do for them but try and make people understand that things MUST CHANGE for the better, and soon.

My Muso friends call me “Naughty Nana”, my Team of volunteers refer to me as THE Nana, and I admit to being well known for saying “I told you so”. While some wear their hearts on their sleeve, I wear my arse on my hand (skin graft, fire accident), and I get bloody good mileage in laughs with that fact! (loves it when some full of himself bloke kisses my hand!) (gives added meaning to the working man’s salute)

My number one favourite skill is the ability to put together jigsaw puzzles without looking at the picture on the box, metaphorically speaking.

It is a pleasure to find a place where people are civil, even in disagreement.

Company towns, filled with cheap labour, with all of those repossessed homes for the workers, at inflated rents.

What else did you think the banks were going to do with all of those foreclosed houses???
