To see such utter devastation, and to know that people I care about are in the midst of this is difficult. I have 2 muso friend who were on tour and not yet heard from. A niece working in Japan also not heard from. Through your writing I have come to care very much about you and yours. At least you are safe for now. Watching my home country tearing itself apart, watching this Earth, our Mother, tearing herself apart, it’s all just more than I can bare. Sometimes I find myself wishing that I could hug every single person on this blue ball and tell them that it will all be OK. But I can’t, and it won’t. It does no good to yell at the nuclear power advocates and say I told you so. Recriminations are not what is called for. So many disasters in so many places, we are all stretched to the limits when it comes to helping our fellow travellers on this rock. All I have left to give is love and hope. If I truly believed that the current USA administration was free of the ‘new American century’ mob, I might hold out hope of more restraint from Obama. But honestly I hold no hope there. The die was cast a long time ago, and the decisions made behind closed doors. Blackwater types are already well entrenched into these countries as highly trained security for their leaders, and as guards in their prisons. Whether the UN goes first is irrelevant. The question will then be who gets the UN nod as occupiers, the USA, of course, being the first choice. Look at it this way, with the USA in deep doodoo at home, with millions of young people leaving school with no prospect of employment, the military is becoming more and more the only option they have for a steady pay check, the pool of canon fodder is ready made. Arms and munitions factories provide jobs and prepare the working class for long hard hours at low wages. Appealing to their patriotism and their lack of knowledge of any history not re-written and approved by ‘my country right or wrong bible thumpers’, as well as their desperate need to be able to put food on their tables and another gun in the pick-up rack, will keep the factories running and cranking out munitions to sell to both sides, as always. Housing the workers? Easy, company housing. What else did you think the banks were going to do with all of those foreclosed houses? When a workers home is part of his/her wages packet, that worker will tolerate serious indignities to keep a roof over their family’s heads. In the mean time, the cheap formerly made in china goods factories and sweat shops will be moving into full swing. But I digress. USA troops on the ground in Libya by 1 April. The rhetoric is definitely in the direction of invasion of Libya, but then the corporate war machine has been salivating over Libyan light sweet crude for decades. My estimate is another 2 weeks before an excuse is found to justify an invasion of Libya ‘for the good of the people’. It is never a pleasure to say “I told you so” in situations such as what is happening in Libya, but just after arriving there was a descussion as the ‘no fly zone’ was first boached in regards to Libya. Gaddaffi is now playing the “Crusader” card, and the “Imperialistic nature” of the Christian West is being thrown out in a manner sure to provoke the Muslim world to serious resentment, especially as they remember their history of colonisation, something we in the west are prone to forget. Had the Allies waited to allow the first missels/bombs to be landed by Saudi Arabia, it might be different. This time it’s going to be a Holy War, and we are all in the shits. But, from my knowledge of geology, mostly learned from the petro-geologists in the family and friends of, every major quake has the potential to set off a daisy chain of quakes. If Japan has moved 15 inches to the east, that’s 15 inches more pressure on the western side of Pacific plate, translating to more pressure on the eastern edge of the Pacific plate, meaning the west coast of the America’s. This quake was kind of like when you vacuum and you push up under a carpet. First the edge of the carpet gets bent under, That’s called subduction. But as you push the vacuum further under the edge of the carpet, the edge will snap back flat. That causes massive Tsunami’s. It’s exactly what happened in Sumatra, and is over due in New Zealand. Where the Pacific plate meets the North American plate is also a subduction zone. Sooner or later it will also snap. For a really good look at these zones, try Google Earth. Western Australia is the place for people who like wide open spaces and crystal clear skies. The Milky Way above my place is so thick you could run your fingers through it. Or if you are seriously into surfing, para-surfing, ultra lights, hiking, nature, anthropology, geology, treasure hunting, camping and climbing, and of course swimming with whale sharks, again WA is the place. If you are seriously into music, you could do the entire tour, a new music festival every week throughout Australia, and barely scratch the surface. One thing you will NOT encounter in Australia is earthquakes. What few that do occur here are missed by 80% of those right on top of them. I am told that the skiing in the Eastern mountains is great, but I prefer to avoid the snow. 50 years of it was enough for me!
