Look how long it’s been since the major Civil Rights successes occurred, and just look at what kind of racist garbage crawled out from under rocks when the country elected and re-elected a half-Black Potus. {wink} Miles “I’ll Never Be Fooled Again” Long » Posted By Miles Long On June 24, 2014 @ 8:29 pm Iraq And The Ghosts Of South Vietnam It’s not a matter of not learning, it’s that we just don’t care. A generation of media complicity in the crimes perpetrated by our government has ensured that NO ONE cares. And before you all raise your voices in protest to ME, here and now, pay attention: unless you can greatly bolster your numbers, raise your voices above the crowd and effectively shame those who kill in our name (if that’s at all possible), nothing is going to change. Miles “Bottom Line” Long » Posted By Miles Long On June 23, 2014 @ 7:06 pm There is much to what you say, but I believe that the notion of American Exceptionalism which is the cornerstone of Conservative and Neo-Conservative thought is, at heart, the basis for conceptual delusion that drives our penchant for war. Iraq will probably never be a Democracy in the sense that Americans understand the institution, as illustrated by the fact that not a single architect or cheerleader in the run up to the war there knew the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite. The compounded ignorance of those who were pushing for America’s first war of economic expansion in the modern age was their effort to seize the wealth of a nation under a lying pretext for war. Saddam Hussein had managed to keep the three factions (including the Kurds) separate and unengaged militarily under his rule. The country had a well-established middle class; girls were free to wear what they wanted and attend school. And though Hussein had his despotic tendencies, he was our guy; until he wasn’t. We broke it, and for years we lacked the intelligence and will to fix it. Before the war there was water, electricity, commerce and a population more interested in first-world values than not. In Afghanistan the results of our intervention are far worse. the saying “those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it” is just the surface layer of our failure, born of a war that we can’t possible win. There has never been a central government in Afghanistan’s history, the political infrastructure there is tribal, with nearly everyone repudiating any notion of a central authority. Our policies going into the war were a brand of the stereotypical Ugly American on steroids. The Bush crime family was determined to prosecute a war and ignoring the capture of the architect on the original 9/11 attack. No one had taken the time to examine the results of the Soviet Union’s conflict in the region, or if they did, assumed that somehow America’s Military at much lower staffing levels could somehow do what the USSR could not. America’s corporate interests have no desire to employ diplomatic solutions to their commercial concerns, and have “employed” America’s Military to grease the way forward in regions of the world completely unconcerned with going along to get along. Comparing Vietnam with the two wars President Obama is carefully extricating our country from has to be a more insightful exercise. At it’s base, the Vietnam war was more a matter of the US and USSR fighting for control of the region through proxies. Iraq was an attempted land grab for control of oil reserves that Dick Cheney had parceled out to the various petroleum multinationals before a single American boot hit the sand. Afghanistan was about ensuring the security of a petroleum pipeline more so than anything else, especially in light of the Bush administration’s amnesia over trying to capture or kill OBL was so nakedly exposed. All war in the modern age is fought over corporate profit, not even ex-KGB mope Vladimir Putin’s aspirations of resurrecting the scope and might of Cold War Soviet Russia is a matter of politics. And in the end, our corporate media are dissipated and corrupt at every turn as they play cheerleader for the next war down the road.
