I still don’t have a clue why he just wouldn’t pay the Jewish butcher off. He was just being petulant and stupid. After that, trying to make nice with Nucky was clearly not going to happen. The Board was correct he should have fought to the end as at least he would go down with a fight. In the end, it was almost like a martyr mission, or suicide by cop (or mob in this case). After his wife got bumped I figure he just unraveled, and the flashback to college and that really fucked up scene with his mom, I can’t say them bumping him off should have been a complete surprise. And yet the foreshadowing only became clear in retrospect, it was still quite a shock. That’s really cool he had a say in it. It seems he really got into being the character, as that is how the character would want to die. Those veterans died a bit over there anyway. It was fitting. We learned later that he joined the army ’cause he wasn’t from the most stable environment in the first place, but that was really something he could never come back from. It’s almost as if his whole short career as mobster was a manifestation of PTSD. Or was he always a little sociopathic? Like I said, HBO has good writers. Even the bad guys are complex characters. I wonder if Gretchen Mol and his son will be in next season. How would you write that? Does the Board reluctantly get in with Nucky? With the creepy FBI guy out of the picture with his baptismal murder come to light, does the prosecutor from Law & Order CI become more of an antagonist, or his her case over? Do we see the rise of Al Capone? A flare-up with New York? I guess we’ll all have to wait. Ours was right next to the High School, really fancy. Separated by a little wire fence next to the school parking lot. A literal stone’s throw. They would just walk over for a period of ‘class’. (There was also a nice one, like a mini temple later built across the street of my old Junior High for the same purpose, but before and after school, I think.) I wrote a letter to the editor to the school paper about how this violated the spirit if not law of Separation of Church and State. I made it clear I had no problem with their religion, they are understandably sensitive about that. There was a reply and I was invited to the seminary. I don’t see why, I didn’t have trouble that they went to seminary, but it was just that misguided Mormon hospitality, I guess. Funny thing. We never got any missionaries at the door after that.
