Morning Blog – 12-30-09

Good afternoon javaz, hope you are well and enjoying your weekend.

I was just reading about this incident in my inbox and feel more strongly than ever that there needs to be reform in your gun control laws, there has to be better screening, there have to be less guns in circulation.

Well Russia and China have been the hold outs until now because of their own invested interests, it about bloody time they thought about the rest of the world too.

The nutters who murdered and suppressed their own people during the faux elections results demonstrations, will stop at nothing to remain in power. Green are my eyes and green is the colour paraded by the people who want an end to the clamp down on their ideals of democracy. I applaud their courage and the struggle that is far from over.

“Fridays child is loving and giving.”

Good morning everyone!

No upset tummies or hangovers I hope. FGIF!

As the U.K. comes to grips with the details of their role in the planning and their following involvement in the invasion of Iraq, two more views and more revelations come to light.

“Thursdays child has far to go.”

Well I’m sure that I will not be seeing most of you before I sleep, I know that you have a very busy day ahead. I hope that you all have a wonderful day with your families, hope that Uncle what’s- his- name behaves, that some of you get to sit down at last and have fun. Remember that little sip of wine or whatever for yourselves in the kitchen to help you go with the flow.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. See you when I see you, if it’s anything like my New Year, you might need a few days to recover.

Looking forward to hearing any funny stories from your gatherings.

Take care, be safe. See you soon.

» Posted By Kalima On November 26, 2009 @ 2:10 am

I’ll try to do that, maybe in a post on Speakers Corner soon.

Cheers.

Goodnight, Mac is going to cool off.

kesmarn thank you but you didn’t have to go all out to defend my honour, it was sweet of you and I thank you again. GN. 🙂

As I just said to javaz, please treat this place as your own, it was intended to give you a place to chat, to greet each other or whatever you might want to talk about. Have fun.

I hate to be a party pooper but it’s getting late here and I wake up early every morning to feed my 6 furry ones, my other 10 furry refugees and 30 sparrows, it’s a small zoo and everyone is hungry.

Nicole just came and I will have to bid you a good night and a good day too. These time zones are so silly.

Take care. Be safe and I send my wishes for a good day for all of you.

Oh and it’s for the whole day too, whenever you need a break from the serious stuff too. I just move it to Speakers Corner every day at 9am EST. It was the first time I was a few minutes late today, got caught up in talking about food. Don’t tell anyone, it will be our little secret.

» Posted By Kalima On November 25, 2009 @ 6:11 am

Good morning nicole, great to see you again.

Actually I buy the big plastic containers of McCormick brown gravy mix, the 240g ones and although if I’m roasting a chicken, pork roast or beef, I will make my own gravy from the juices. This stuff tastes quite good and for my Shepherd’s pie, I like lots of gravy.

You can do it here, this thread is for all of you, for anything and when we get to about 100 comments, it will go to the archives for you to always be able to check on things like links or recipes. You can do what you want here.

You can subscribe to their email service nellie, straight to your inbox every day, I also get Reuters.

I’m news starved here and Japanese news is full of stagnant politics or murders and bores me to sleep. iI my hubby insists on watching the 9 o’clock news downstairs on the bigger screen, I nod off sitting up, he leaves after about 10 minutes to watch the rest upstairs.

BBC World and CNN International are all I get on cable here. Japanese news makes me fall asleep, so poor hubby goes upstairs to watch it.

Ground lean beef, I don’t eat lamb and ground beef browns very quickly.

Good morning to you BDM, I wish that I had known, I would have invited you over, we have tons left over. My oldest Abys, Coco loves home cooking, she is the best plate licker in the world, had 2 plates to lick tonight and is now upside down fast asleep with her big tummy in the air.

My recipe is very simple. If I am cooking something in a rush, I use lean ground beef which I grind at home.
Slice and dice 2 carrots, a handful of French beans cut in about 1 inch sized lengths, saute for about 6 minutes, add diced celery stick and a roughly chopped onion, pour in a little water, cover and reduce heat to low for another 6 minutes. Brown beef, add to veggies, after which I add sliced white mushrooms and thawed frozen peas. It’s hard to make original gravy from ground lean beef so I use Mc>Cormick brown gravy mix, you add warm water and I add about 2 cups to the meat and veggie, mix for a minute and pour the mixture into a large pyrex dish we have.

Next I boil about 8 to 10 medium potatoes for 18 minutes, mash them by hand adding butter, a little milk and shredded red cheddar cheese. When hubby gets home i either pipe or just spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat and veggie mixture, then in a pre-heated oven, gas 180C, cook for a further 20 minutes in the oven.

You can ajust the taste of the meat mixture by either adding a little more powder gravy mix or if you prefer a little more salt.

Then sit down and get stuck in, it’s great for cold evenings, warms you up from the inside.

Good morning nellie, yes the Guardian has a lot of diverse interest stories, I enjoy getting it in my inbox every week day, go to http://www.guardian.co.uk/ to check it out, and of course there is always the good old Beeb and http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/

I subscribe to The Guardian U.K. email and find some really interesting stories there. A months ago they had a whole set of videos about a Cheese Festival, it was very amusing.

I lived in England from age 9 to my 20’s, my father is there and so is my sister, I get homesick very often so the Guardian, the BBc and a few other sites help me to stay in touch.

Glad you liked it and happy your pies turned out so well. We had Shepherd’s pie tonight because someone sent us a box of potatoes, want to finish them off before they grow whiskers.

Alrighty then you wonderful people, I’m typing with one eye closed, never a good sign, more tired than I thought. Will have to call it a night and see you all hopefully, in my morning.

I do hate the darned time zones and the way they boss me around.

Take care and be safe. Good night gentle souls.

The Brits put coins in their Christmas Pudding. The Japanese send Christmas cards, at least the younger ones or the ones educated abroad do, but New Year’s card sending is a tradition here and shops used to be closed from the 1st to the 4th, now there are many small 7/11 shops all over and the department stores are open from the 2nd, with most companies starting again on the 6th.

Funny you should say that javaz, I had sort of promised to do a column or post about my various adventures and cultural faux pas during my years here, I even had notes from when they were still fresh in my mind, I can’t find those notes anywhere, have been searching since June. Still looking, without them my stories will lack the rawness of the hysterical things that have happened to me or I caused to happen during my time here. Tokyo was never the same.

Yes they put up trees here but apart from the Christians in Japan, their idea of Christmas is purely about the gift and that’s fine with me too but could have done without the Christmas song crooning at the Starbuck’s in the hospital grounds this afternoon.
