I try to be accepting but there is something just weird about Mormonism to me personally, maybe it’s the latter day saints thing. Even though I was raised RC and Christian religions should seem less strange to me I find Mormonism much stranger than Easter, Native, Islamic religions by far. One thing I really don’t like about the Mormon religion is that you can be posthumously baptize you into Mormonism obviously against your wishes. Honestly I read some of the comments on conservative blogs and what Dems say about Romney is mild in comparison. I mean they are absolutely ruthless. My favorite was a Republican who said that ‘Romney was a combination of all the worse characteristics of every bad presidential candidate. The principles and excitement of Bob Dole and GHWB, the flip flops Kerry, the arrogance and foul temperament of McCain, the stiffness of Gore and a gaffe machine like Biden.’ Then he called him ‘Willard “The Rat” Mittens Romney’. In the time I’ve been blogging about politics I have never seen a day this bad on political blogs for a politician, including the whole “Goddamn America” Rev Wright thing. At least then Obama supporters were mightily defending Obama. But today I saw very few people defend Romney. Even Michele Malkin gave said his comments were a ‘facepalm’ to conservatives. The problem was Romney’s comments angered progressives and conservatives equally. EVERYONE piled on Romney today including his NRO supporters. It was fascinating to see conservatives have what almost seems to be a last straw moment with Romney. DailyKOS had two stories posting quotes from the Free Republic and Red State sites but the hits did not end there. Conservative sites like Hot Air and even NRO were all over Romney’s gaffe and then endorsement of the social safety net. Of course the progressive sites, DailyKOS, ThinkProgress, Bob Cesca’s Blog, The People’s View save for AOLHP which was still all over Obama even publishing a ridiculous column by Mathew Dowd calling Obama unelectable, but that’s besides the point. The big thing Obama had going for him in his “bitter” and “Wright” controversies was that he had a steadfast base of support that defended him. Remember this is the first all GOP primary because it’s closed to Independents and Democrats. So like some of us hypothesized, the turnout with primaries in SC, NH and IA caucus were probably only higher because Independents and Democrats voted for Paul. Paul also had his lowest showing by far in FL with only 7% of the vote which is consistent with that notion. I can’t express how terrible this low turnout is for the GOP moving forward, especially since FL has early voting. This significantly lower turnout bodes very badly for whoever is the GOP nominee because it’s a result of a totally negative campaign. Worse yet after four states a whopping 38% of Republican are not happy with this GOP field yet in FL according to MSNBC exit polls. Romney is perhaps the worse opponent to run against an incumbent in modern history. His favorable/unfavorable numbers are just horrible. PPP just came out today with them. Q: Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of Mitt Romney? Favorable: 31 (35) To put this in perspective even McCain’s favorable were in positive territory just before the election and was in the 60’s favorable for a while. Favorable numbers are simply not something you can rehabilitate once they get very negative like Romney’s. People tend to like candidates even less the more they are exposed not more likeable. Like you said Romney running a filthy campaign against Newt (who probably is the only candidate who has a higher negative rating than him) is one thing but running a dirty campaign against a sitting president who has no fatal issues is another thing altogether.
