Remember I wrote here a couple of weeks ago about how Montana Republicans were trying to REQUIRE women seeking abortions to get an ultrasound? Well, more craziness from Republicans gone wild. A bill sponsored by Montana House Majority Leader Tom McGillvray, a Republican, would REQUIRE couples with minor children getting a divorce to first obtain marriage counseling before getting their divorce. A hearing got held on the bill before a judiciary committee and most of the people speaking in favour of the bill cited religious reasons that marriages need to be preserved. “This 40-year-old experiment with wide-open, one-sided, no-fault divorce has had a devastating effect on families and especially children,” said Jeff Laszloffy of the Montana Family Foundation. Of course, that doesn’t address the damage done to children by keeping them in a miserable, unhappy, possibly emotionally abusive household. Sometimes divorce is the best thing for a family, believe it or not. The couples would have to pay for the counseling out of their own pockets. The bill would waive this requirement if there was PHYSICAL abuse, but says NOTHING about emotional or psychological abuse. Here is my favourite part of this story. Last week a state legislator went on rant during a debate about the death penalty (the state comes close every legislature to banning the death penalty), that there are HIV-positive prisoners in the state pen who make poison darts by licking spitwads and shooting them at guards. Here is one of her wacky quotes: There’s new ways to kill. You know, if a prisoner is HIV-positive, they make little weapons out of pieces of paper. They take their blood, their saliva and do blow darts on the guards. There are new and unique ways to kill! According to the CDC, no one has ever gotten AIDS from spitting. Her point is anyone who kills through AIDS spit should be killed via the death penalty. There’s actually a very popular YouTube video of her insanity.

The bill would’ve required women getting abortions to have an ultrasound done of their fetus, and doctors would be required to show the ultrasound to the mothers … though language was inserted that would protect mothers from being prosecuted if they “averted their eyes from the ultrasound.” Well, the bill failed in the State House, by a scary close vote of 53-47. Republicans have officially gone crazy. At least in Montana. Not only did Republicans pass a bill out of committee requiring women getting an abortion to be shown an ultrasound (though they would be given the option in which they could avert their eyes from the ultrasound without fear of criminal prosecution, isn’t that nice.), another Republican in Montana has proposed a bill to create citizen volunteer paramilitary guard units. Ostensibly the point of these units would be to help the police in times of emergency, but the real intent is pretty easy to find here when you see a lot of language from their supporters about the intrusion of the federal government into local matters.
