As for today’s question, there are 0% grapes and 0% nuts in Grape Nuts! It’s made of whole wheat and barley.

CL and Sue, I just checked out United in Progress and they seem to be just a voter registration site. The website was pretty “thin” on particulars.

I joined in hopes of getting a little more info…OMG! I’m a member of a RW Christian website!! This is duty above and beyond!!! 🙂

CL, I went over to Amazon a little while ago and it was still not available. But I did go to a “forum” and started a thread there, asking why the book was not available. I don’t know if they pay any attention or not, but it was the closest thing to an email I could find.

Kalima, I used to have a daughter-in-law who was like that, never ever satisfied. My son left too, completely frustrated. He could never make her happy.

I plan to work on Obama’s campaign locally. We have a state university here and plan to do a voter registration drive on campus. Last election, I made phone calls for him. That was interesting in a very conservative area!

The good news is that polls show today that President Obama is still ahead of both Perry and Romney by 7 and 8 points respectively. That’s a little ray of light! If he can get the jobs bill passed in Congress, I think we will see a little improvement in the economy and unemployment. That will help him overall.

Amen, Kalima! I don’t understand just what the whiners want! Would they rather have a President Perry? God forbid!!

Rachel Maddow did an interview with former President Jimmy Carter today. He is quite optimistic that President Obama will be re-elected. Let’s all hope and pray that he is right!

Excellent point, Kalima! That’s the biggest reason that I believe in PPOV. We can keep talking and writing and sharing to keep those important issues on the front burner, issues that the MSM misses.

Sue, your point about not taking on all the world’s problems is a good one. I sometimes feel really overwhelmed with so many important issues out there, everything from the famine in Africa to voter suppression here. I feel frustrated that I cannot do more to fix things. We have to pick and choose, I guess.

Note to me: Set your priorities and work on those.

I think my #1 priority is going to be publicizing the religious right wing and the Dominionists. This is something that I believe to be very dangerous to the country and our way of life. This IS something I can do something about…I can keep on writing and sharing information, hoping that it will be seen and taken to heart by others. I know that you and I share the concern about these people and that I will always have friends who will be supportive.

My #2 priority will be working to see President Obama re-elected. This could overtake my #1 as we draw closer to the election.

Sorry…didn’t mean to get on a roll, but you made me think about this! I’m glad you did!

I guess, to their supporters, they have “IT” too, but you have to remember that these people definitely are NOT sane! 🙂

Well, Kes…I don’t think it’s nearly that sophisticated. A lot was made of Rick Perry’s’ hair and Sister Sarah’s looks in general. Romney is said to look “presidential” with good hair too. I remember the Nixon-Kennedy debate where Nixon looked like a sweaty ghost and JFK showed up all tanned and buff.

There seems to be an “IT” factor. When a candidate has “IT”, we know it…or at least, we are told that he/she does by the media. Pawlenty simply did NOT have “IT”. I know this because they told me so.

In the South, it seems to be a generational thing…if it was good enough for my daddy, it’s good enough for me. So, you end up with a straight party-line vote in successive elections. I supposed this could be likened to the sports analogy you gave, an irrational loyalty to one party.

I think if money had been the determining factor, John McCain would be out trying to stoke the jobs market right now with only occasional visits to his seven homes.

I can’t speak for other parts of the country, but I think a lot of it depends on the voter’s environment, friends, church affiliation, and education. In this past presidential election, Obama received more votes from the college educated crowd, but he did not do as well with blue-collar white voters. This would speak more to those voters who actually do learn about the issues.

I guess we can’t limit it to one or two factors, but one thing stands out to me…that MOST voters in this country are either too ignorant or too lazy to get up off their asses and learn about the candidates and their positions. They end up voting for “IT”! The Village Idiot is a prime example of that!

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to “IT”! 🙂

Good morning/evening, Kalima! Sorry about your A/C! I hope they can get if fixed once and for all.

The one article you posted today that, I believe, is the most important for your American readers, is the one about the shrinking middle class. There are some astounding facts and figures there, none of which are encouraging. Also of interest is the link within the article to Senator Bernie Sanders’ hearing on poverty.

The numbers should stun every American….one in six Americans now live below the poverty line, including 22% of our children!

Meanwhile, our representatives in Congress stumble blindly on, scoring their petty political points, paying for wars and weapon systems, giving out corporate welfare, and damning those at the bottom of the heap to lives of despair…no jobs, no hope, no opportunities.

The President is trying, God bless him, to somehow bring on that “rising tide” that is supposed to lift all boats, but even yesterday as the jobs bill was being delivered to Congress, the republicans were pulling the plug on it.

The Democrats have been strangely silent on the jobs bill. The repubs, as usual, have once again grabbed the microphone to spew their talking points. And if that weren’t enough, last night we got the disturbing news that the Dems lost TWO special elections. Things are not looking good for the home team this morning.

I am personally on a roller coaster ride. When the President made his speech a few nights ago, I was so encouraged and thinking surely the repubs would be painted into a box, forced to vote to pass the AJA or risk losing the next election. But this morning, between their rhetoric and the very, very bad numbers on poverty, I am not so sure. Whether it is the policies of the President or not doesn’t seem to make any difference. It was reported on “Morning Joke” that Democratic voters in Nevada just stayed home yesterday, giving the repubs a victory there. What do we have to do to end this complacency?

As Big Eddie says, “All the money goes to the top, all the tax breaks go to the top…and they wonder why the American people are so upset!” I just wish they were!

Yeah, good luck on getting the top dogs! They did a pretty good job of covering their tracks, including destroying CIA torture tapes. That still has not come to light…only an announcement by Justice that there would be no prosecutions. I don’t know what it’s going to take to hold these war criminals accountable!

Good morning/evening, Kalima! Glad to hear you made it through the typhoon with little problem. It’s pretty incredible…Japan just can’t get a break!

There is one item in your MB that is so important, IMO. It is the article about the Libyan “treasure-trove” of intelligence documents showing UK and US involvement in rendition/torture. I have been hoping that information would be discovered implicating Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld for starters.

There has been a rather steady drip-drip of info coming out for the past several years, but nothing that would stand out enough for the American people to demand trials for our own “terrorists”! Although this article only stated that there had been an offer of “assistance” by the CIA, I am hopeful that more information specific to the Agency will be discovered.

Good morning/evening, Kalima! As usual, a great selection for my weekend reading! Thanks!

On the hurricane…although I am not on the coast, actually some 350 miles away, I have been watching Irene’s progress very closely. I have friends who live only yards from the ocean in a lovely place called Emerald Isle.

The hurricane has just made landfall at Cape Lookout at the southern end of the barrier islands with incredible amounts of rain. The winds are not as bad as had been forecast but still over 100mph and capable of doing some property damage and downing some trees. The biggest problem now, besides the heavy rain and flooding, will be tornadoes in the area. There have already been reports of extensive damage and a few injuries. We still have not seen the full brunt of the storm yet. There is significant storm surge into the sounds behind the barrier islands with over-wash in some places. Abnormally high tides are complicating the surge of up to 10 feet, as well as pounding wave action and beach erosion. Buoys off-shore have recorded waves of over 25 feet. Waves of this height, coupled with the surge, have the potential of doing great damage. We’ll have to wait and see.

As this is a huge storm, it’s going to be with us for another 24 hours in North Carolina. The best we could wish for our neighbors up north is that Irene would swing out to sea, but the models show it raking the coast all the way to Cape Cod and beyond, even into Maine.

This hurricane has the potential of taking lives and costing billions in damage. So far, the relief agencies seem to be on top of it, positioning supplies and personnel in advance. FEMA is being reported as doing a great job, much to the chagrin of Ron Paul who thinks that we don’t need any government agency…what a putz!

The mayors of the major metro areas to be affected by the storm are making all necessary emergency plans, including the shut-down of all mass transit in New York City. They have ordered mandatory evacuation of everyone in low-lying areas of the 5 boroughs, over 350,000 people! This storm may go down in history as affecting more people than any other…some 55-60 million are being targeted.

If people will just use some common sense and take precautions as their local emergency agencies are recommending, we can come through this with no loss of life! Prayers for all in the track of this dangerous storm!

ADDENDUM: Apparently, we DID learn something from Katrina! During that storm, people would not leave their pets to go to a safe shelter. However, this time, the Red Cross is announcing that shelters will allow domestic pets to come with their owners! The Humane Society is pitching in to help! This may actually save lives, owners and pets alike! A little bright spot! 🙂

K, unfortunately you may be correct. There will always be a natural disaster or some other problem to disrupt some country’s growth as we have seen with Japan. With the inter-connectedness of all economies, “modest” may be the new normal.

Kalima, thanks for including the Guardian article about the fusion reactor. Fascinating! The author, Mr. Hickman, managed to describe the process in easily-understood terms. With such a small cost comparably, why aren’t we pursuing this?

Oh, I forgot…the US is BROKE!

Makes me wonder if this will go the way of all good energy production ideas, sold off and hidden away!

Bito, just think! If we can hold the Senate and re-take the House and get the President re-elected, what wonderful things he will be able to do, not only on the foreign policy front, but domestic issues as well. I know, Tomasky thinks this is not probable, but I believe we can!

It’s so nice to see someone..anyone…giving the President some credit for doing things right!

Cher, I just wrote a reply to Kalima, but it is just as applicable to your comment as to hers. I hope you will read it. That kind of discrimination by medical doctors is so terrible for the patients who are labeled, sometimes for life! It is so unfair!

I do, however, agree with you…the threats are completely unnecessary and counter-productive!
