A tax of 0.1 percent on all trades of stocks and bonds and a 0.01 percent tax on all trades of derivatives would generate enough revenue to pay us back for the bailouts, and still have plenty left over to fight the deficits the banks claim to be so worried about. Tax hedge-fund gamblers. For starters, we need an immediate repeal of the preposterous and indefensible carried-interest tax break. No public money for private lobbying. A company that receives a public bailout should not be allowed to use the taxpayer’s own money to lobby against him. Change the way bankers get paid. We need new laws preventing Wall Street executives from getting bonuses upfront for deals that might blow up in all of our faces later. These are all important but to be frank, they just don’t resonate to me. To be clear, I think they are all worthy but feel too wonky for the movement. I’d start with something bigger and harder, like overturning Citizens United and demanding that only small donations be allowed for campaigns–no corporate funding, only public. But to be honest, here in LA is was incredibly easy to participate. We got on the train a few blocks from our house and in 40 minutes (and $5 round trip) we were 2 blocks from City Hall where the demonstration takes place. The Metro here is fast, quiet and clean. The crowd was great, there was music, the city had blocked off some streets, there were even Porta-potties provided. What more could we ask for? He seems to be in the business of entertainment. If I look at his comments from an entertainment perspective, he’s right. But how can he with a straight face think any of those are at all valid from a news/journalism perspective?! Basically, your producer friend was being honest and helpful in revealing the sorry state of the media. He/she admitted that they need their stories easy for them to report, they want conflict with the authorities, they want once source only, and most of all they want THEIR preferred narrative. 1. He’s bored, while the movement grows exponentially, and world wide. He wants it to do what? Did Tarir Square’s novelty wane?
2. There have been dozens of high profile speakers (I know for as fact that’s the case in NY and Los Angeles). From his ADD POV, I’d think that was even more “entertaining” than just one spokesman, over and over.
3.There is no lack of clear agenda at all. In fact, the problem might be that the agenda is overarching, and not tidy enough for the “news” to reduce to ONE bumper sticker. But don’t we all here know exactly the agenda of the OWS movement? If we can figure it out, so can journalists.
4.This is the most infuriating. The reporters want to report the stories THEY want–not the stories that are there already–and there are plenty, as you know. All over the internet are fantastic stories of the 99% protesters. They apparently just aren’t providing the phony narrative these “reporter” want.”
5. Again, this is just not the case. So what if there is not one spokesperson? That is just laziness an the part of the media. I bet if any TV person wanted to spend the time to listen to enough protesters, they’d be able to hear the same complaints and get the idea.
