(Crybabies cry their eyes out–literally!) My mother was raised with many stories like those and she was determined not to repeat that pedagogy with me. Here’s where Bettelheim comes in: Even though my mother refused to frighten me with old-wives’ tales, I used to go to double-feature horror movies every weekend and then suffer nightmares until next Saturday, when I’d go again. My parents let me (for some weird reason) but would always ask me why I’d want to terrify myself each week?!
