People really don’t have that expression even when they see something astounding; eyes may get bigger and mouths may open slightly, but there is something theatrical about The Spielberg Face. It has more in common with the directoral styles and acting styles of a much earlier era. It’s mugging. I like several of Spielberg’s movies, but most are too predictable. I watch the trailer for his latest (War Horse)and cringe. It appears to be one of the most manipulative of all. His use of John Williams’ scores are another way he manipulates almost each beat of the action. I have to admit though that AI got me, even as I knew I was being manipulated.
