Just this weekend, I told another couple who are friends that I wouldn’t be around another couple they introduced us to (nice, interesting people) because they were Republicans. I really cannot abide the Right. And I have abandoned long-standing friends who are Jewish religious-Right. So I call that harsh and unforgiving. But I have to say, if I was confronted by someone asking me if I thought I was better than them, I’d be of two minds. On one level, I’d say, Yes, I am better. But on a deeper level, of course I’d think No, no I am no better than you. I usually think, “There but for the grace of God…” What I know I’d say unequivocally is, “I am smarter.” Bear in mind, I am an only child from a liberal family–no one in my entire family is a Republican, so I never had to try to get along, and I realize that is to my disadvantage. I know deep down that they are not all evil. I am also aware that I self-select to never encounter them. But some have sneaked in to my world at times and they are “nice” people. Yesterday, #Happy Hanukkah was trending on Twitter, and they published a ton of Tweets from people asking “WTF is Hanukkah??” To be frank, this really doesn’t surprise me. We are a tiny minority, and have a disproportionate amount of influence on the culture, considering how few of us there actually are. I think of the vast middle of the country who have never heard about Jews outside of references in church, and haven’t met any.
