I just really hate it when textbooks give definitive answers when the answers aren’t definitive. It’s like telling children that negative numbers don’t exist and then telling them that they do. Why? It doesn’t really make things that much easier. It stifles inquisitiveness. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 4:40 pm 1.) Organisation – though they foolishly, IMO, limit it to just cellular organisation. 2.) Nutrition 3.) Excretion 4.) Response 5.) Reproduction – though this one gets ridiculous when you get to the eunuch argument, as I’ve taken to calling it. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 4:36 pm Just going off on a tangent for a second: Is it just me or are the five characteristics of life in biology designed not just to exclude non-living things, but also things that we may not want to admit could be alive? Also, if you challenge anyone on this they give you the ridiculous argument of fire fulfilling at least 4 of these characteristics, so that means that anything that does not display all 5 must be non-living. Fire only fulfils those characteristics if you stretch the definitions to absurd levels. It’s the biological equivalent to the “why don’t you marry it” argument. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 4:24 pm Soft drinks or fizzy drinks here. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 1:51 pm No need to duck, I agree completely. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 1:36 pm You got a point there, man. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 1:27 pm And he’s been on the back-foot ever since, even though the whole debacle was caused by several misunderstandings on all sides of this disagreement. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 1:26 pm I agree. » Posted By Caru On March 24, 2011 @ 1:20 pm Of course there are still problems with homophobia in Ireland, but most people are moving on to the “why should I care” way of thinking. As for racism in Ireland, I think that this video demonstrates one important aspect about racism in Ireland:
» Posted By Caru On March 20, 2011 @ 3:26 pm Oh, Ireland of course. » Posted By Caru On March 20, 2011 @ 3:13 pm Lol. » Posted By Caru On March 20, 2011 @ 3:12 pm Hey, we’ve changed a lot in the last while. Homosexuality is probably much less of an issue here now than the treatment of travellers. » Posted By Caru On March 20, 2011 @ 3:02 pm “The new Irish Foreign Minister, Eamon Gilmore, told a New York gathering of gay equality advocates of Irish descent at the Irish consulate that “Exclusion is not an Irish thing”–and that includes the exclusion of GLBTs. Gilmore said that banning gays and lesbians from openly participating in the parade was a departure from what it means to be Irish in the first place.” http://www.edgeboston.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc2=news&sc3=&id=117480 » Posted By Caru On March 20, 2011 @ 2:28 pm The full transcript of Obama’s speech at the Gridiron Dinner: http://theobamadiary.com/2011/03/13/just-for-laughs/#comments Excerpt: “To all the journalists in case you didn’t know. (Laughter.) Haley Barbour is here. And I want to thank him for working with Michelle on the “Let’s Move” campaign. I do have one thing to clear up, though, Haley. You know, when Michelle said, you need to run, she didn’t mean for President. (Laughter and applause.) I wanted to be clear about that.” » Posted By Caru On March 13, 2011 @ 4:59 pm A lie. » Posted By Caru On March 8, 2011 @ 12:26 pm Will people stop asking me that? » Posted By Caru On March 8, 2011 @ 12:16 pm Ugh. » Posted By Caru On March 8, 2011 @ 11:55 am Perhaps people should stop taking sports so seriously. » Posted By Caru On March 8, 2011 @ 11:50 am I’ve read both articles and I cannot say that I emphatically disagree or agree with her imprisonment.
