The reason, it seems to me, that people would consider electrocution or lethal injection – Which, as I’ve read, is a horrific way of dying, but looks “clean” – is because it seems more modern and therefore less primitive. Those who would support the death penalty, yet would cry barbaric at that method, are simply trying to distance themselves from the fact that they too are engaging in what the beheaders are engaging in. I had just come back from my exam, flopped down on the couch and switched on the TV. I was watching a show presented by Michio Kaku. The topic was invisibility. At one point he placed a small pyrex jar inside a larger pyrex jar and then began pouring vegetable oil into it. As the oil rose from the bottom of the larger jar the smaller jar disappeared! I wasn’t obscured, you could see straight through the larger jar, but the smaller one wasn’t there! Kaku explained that because pyrex and vegetable oil have the same refractive index, the light isn’t bent when passing through the second jar, so you couldn’t see it. This came of no surprise to me, as it’s generally been government policy to prevent weapons transfers through Irish channels.
