I’m almost tempted to go back there to hear what he is saying. It occurs to me that the recent events must put him into a awkward position. I know that he favors nuclear energy, but he also hates whatever Obama does. He famously said, “I want him to FAIL!” (even before anyone really knew Obama very well at all.) Since Obama also favors nuclear power, how does Rush square that circle? I’m not curious enough to go back there and listen, though. Good points they make about what Mr. Huckabee said. It doesn’t surprise me that one of those things he said was “Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death…” As you know, the article goes on to point out that this is NOT a true statement. Huckabee just believes whatever it’s convenient for him to believe apparently. And it’s convenient for him to believe this malarky about “most” single mothers (which really IS reminiscent of Reagan’s “welfare queen” talk.) It’s part of that “politics of resentment” that works so well on the Rightwing base. Works like a charm to fire up that base. The conservative listener hears Huckabee say these things, and says “Yeah! I heard on Democracy Now yesterday that we in the U.S. have 23 nuclear power plants that are similarly designed as the ones that are causing such concern in Japan, and Amy Goodman had guests on the show that urged that these plants be shut down. The recent events in Japan have lots of people looking at this issue with fresh concern. On the other hand, I’ve heard proponents of nuclear power who seem like reasonable people as well. One of these people is President Obama. His budget calls for $36 billion in loan guarantees for further nuclear power plant construction. Back on the minus side, there’s the issue of dealing with radioactive waste, and I heard on a podcast (I believe it was the one from the Progressive magazine) that such waste even has the potential of being “weaponable.” That doesn’t sound good. I just wandered back into our production area here at work, and helped my co-worker move aluminum sheets around, and told him what I was thinking about. He was quick to point out some figures he heard on the conservative talk radio, saying that there have only been 7 deaths in the U.S. due to nuclear power, and 47 due to wind-turbine accidents. But that’s talk radio, so I’m not accepting those figures on faith. Personally, I don’t know enough to really have an intelligent opinion on nuclear power, so, like I say, I have research to do. I’ll probably start that tonight, just so that I can feel more informed. Does anyone here have some good recommendations about where I can look for good solid information on the matter?
