I wish it were a little longer, actually. The article might have mentioned that the word “consume” used to have negative connotations in an earlier era. People who wasted away and died used to be known as people who died of consumption. Ellen Dannin points out that “as consumers, we live today in a perpetual now,” and that many of us have forgotten what our ancestors understood: that there is value in building infrastructure that lasts, and that there are more important things than serving one’s own present needs. She’s right. She says that it may not be too late. I hope she’s right. Unfortunately, it seems as though people are simply born into the consumer culture, and that most of us are exposed to little else. We are taught brand-loyalty, to form an identity out of the consumer brands that make up our pop society. I’d like to think that we are more than that. Embarrassment is a powerful driver of peoples’ thought and actions. It’s what makes peer pressure work. It’s what makes social conformity work. Fear of embarrassment shapes opinion and creates consensus, more than almost anything else. There was an old M*A*S*H episode (perhaps you’ve seen it) where Hawkeye and Trapper manipulated two secret agents into believing untrue things about Frank Burns. At the end of the episode, he had one agent on his left shouting, “He’s a Communist!” and the other on the right shouting “He’s a Fascist!” Frank Burns was extremely uncomfortable. He stammered, “No! I’m… I’m… I’m nothing!” That describes most people: afraid of embarrassment, afraid of standing out or even being noticed.
