Abby- I noticed you weren’t around yesterday, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I haven’t had insurance for some time and been paying around $800 month for my meds. My doctor says many of the drug manufacturers have programs for people who don’t have insurance for these expensive meds. You might find out who makes it and call and see if they have some sort of program. Sometimes you have to get your doctor to sign something.

I know there is a difference with some generics and I don’t even understand the point when the cost is so close. I ran across a similar priced one lately – you might as well take the original especially when a young womans life may be at risk!

In fact, I think that is why so many of us came here from HP, to have some civility in discussion. That does not mean we can’t disagree but we can do it with diplomacy, which was becoming next to impossible at the “other”.

I think they opted out of protesting the nine year girl’s funeral that was killed in the Gabby Giffords shooting for some airtime – blackmail and a lot of publicity. But the state passed a law that they could only be so close and only be there at certain hours. What I liked was that the locals planned to have angel wings to form a barrier so the family couldn’t see them. There is also a motorcycle group that will come and keep them at bay, so at least citizens are taking action against them.

I think we need to work on our classification of a “church” and it’s tax status. They are doing all this hatred tax free and that doesn’t make me happy.

He is so gentle with Bob – it’s Bob who abuses the Golden! I’ve never known a Golden that wasn’t a sweetheart.

I adopted one several years ago when I was dog-less but was working long hours and hated to get a puppy. I’m a “work at home” mom with Bob.

The Golden had arthritis just like me – and she had been raised by a young man who was now a married with children. Her problem was she didn’t know when to stop playing and by evening she could barely walk or get up and down the stairs.

We were a good old pair for the last few years of her life, but when one of my sons would come by she would just go crazy – she missed the man in her life.

She would go to my family lake home and get in the water and stay in there for hours. She really could not control her “play” button. She would go until she could barely walk. She was also the smartest dog I ever had.

I read the first few and the information is invaluable if someone is starting a business and also it’s just interesting, but some is over my head. I started a business back in the 80’s before we were using personal computers so it was off to the library for research and bookkeeping was done by hand. Sounds archaic, doesn’t it? Luckily for me my parents had always been self-employed so I had some basic knowledge and a good feel for business.

If you’re willing, I would encourage you to continue, so your piece can be used as a reference. You don’t know how many people in the future you may encourage and save from making some costly errors.

The Shih Tzu? Bob has a long haired mini Dacshund that comes to play and they have the best time. I have a very small apartment but they manage to run from end to end at Mach speed and then Bob is exhausted. I truly enjoy living alone but Bob is what makes my days so pleasant- I can’t imagine a day without him!

Bob is such a prince he is pad trained – he’s very small and doesn’t deal well with weather extremes (neither do I) so we only go out on nice days. We’re both very spoiled! I am tempted to get another one – he’s everything I wanted and more. He’s very gentle with my young grandchildren.

Interesting answers Abby and Kilgore. You know I live at in sorority house with 80 girls, many more in line with the spoiled girls you describe.

I’m at a small private university and most of the students have been pretty protected from the world. I still find about half of my house is liberal, probably because we have a lot of girls from the Chicago area and even the Northeast.

The job market has been very bad for them the last two years and they worry about it – that may be the impetus they need to get active politically. Though I’m at a very traditional campus. I think you’re right that many fewer students are having that experience.

My sons are 35 and 38 so they are from generation X and were lucky to find jobs easily out of college. They’ve both been very fortunate.

When I signed my first contract in 1983 my children were qualified for the free lunch program had I not been married – do you think that’s right?

And that was at a time you had to get your Masters within 5 years. Yeah, that $13K was big money! It takes a two teacher family to live a good middle class life and if you’re a single parent your aren’t doing all that well.

The unions are what have helped to give a teacher a living wage. These are educated people. You want to know why they are treated like second class citizens? Because most of them are women! You don’t see entry level engineers and other college graduates working for the highest teacher pay except for social workers (again mostly women).

I don’t remember my father ever hitting any of us, but we all were scared to death of him or maybe I should say we respected him. We just knew if we did something bad he would be really disappointed in us, which was worse than being hit. It’s amazing the power that had over me, even as an adult.

Last night I was babysitting for my 2yr old and 5 month old grandchildren and my daughter-in-law ask if I had read the “Chinese Mother Tiger” and I said I’d just read excerpts and didn’t totally agree with it but found some of it reasonable. She said she found herself defending it with a group of mothers about disciplining children. Interestingly, we are both teachers, so we see the result of parents that indulge too much. If you don’t expect the best from your children, who will?

I do think there is a happen medium, but as my children became adults, I often wished that I had focused less of their social life and more on their academics. I wish I’d raised nerds – they have time for socializing later. It’s just hard to explain that everything you do at that age does limit what you get to do as an adult – it is not true that you can be anything you want!

In the 60’s it was the young people who were trying to push for change (end the war). I will say the civil rights movement was started by older leaders which is perhaps why it’s intent was peaceful. But it doesn’t seem we have the youth involved and we need their energy. Not sure we can change the country without them – so how do we get them involved instead of discouraged?
