KT – Thank you for being so honest. I have found that many recovering addicts are the kindest people I know. My brother is a remarkable man and one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. He only made it to recovery because he had an accident (while on drugs), had a brain bleed and is now in a nursing home with some damage.

I guess this is why it’s somewhat offensive that some people seem to think that there is some “moral” defect or bad parenting involved. It’s not that easy. I truly believe this is a genetic disease, I have seen it in my family. I have also seen the difference between problem drinkers and alcoholics. There are so many issues here that are being oversimplified and generalized.

I’m not very scared in either – sometimes I think I’m too trusting. I was more scared when I had children to protect – now not so much. Adonai – I think you just like being contrary – imagine what you’ll be like when you get old!

I agree, I’ve lived this. At some point this mother has to save herself, regardless how this young man was raised. I’ve never read that there is much correlation about discipline and addiction. If that were the problem, it’s too late to change the way he was raised, it’s time to address the current problem. She needs to have him arrested, as difficult as that is and give him true boundries that he knows she will not tolerate being crossed. Until he knows she’s serious, he will continue the behavior. If she has other children, this is totally unfair to them. She has to save her family. He is comitting suicide – it’s a matter of whether she’s going to let him do it slowly or let him realize that he really wants to live. That choice is his to make. She needs to go to Alanon to learn this or nothing will change.

I totally agree with you KT. I don’t think addiction has to do with the way you were raised, I think it’s genetic. There are 4 children in my family and there is only one addict, and I see that pattern over and over, however there are alcoholics on both sides, so the genetic pool was not good.

I’ve been dealing with my brother’s addiction issues since he was 16 and I think it’s really difficult for a mother or wife to do what needs to be done which is why other family members can sometimes help with interventions but only when the person is ready to help themselves.

There are only three ways out of addiction: death, incarceration or sobriety. Unfortunately my brother is in a nursing home from a head injury from drugs. He has had 10 yr periods of sobriety but always went back and I had an aunt that would relapse when she was in her late 80’s.

I’ve watched my mother enable my aunt since I was 10 years old, ruining holidays, etc. The mother of this boy is not helping her son, but that doesn’t mean she’ll ever give up on him – you can’t. But she also shouldn’t blame herself, he’s an adult and he’s responsible for his own life.

HH – You are right, that’s absolutely crazy. I’ve read so much bad news today that I’m going to go read a novel – I can’t take anymore! I’m ready to secede from the Union and start my own country, with my own rules and only the happy and peaceful need apply.

My sister is an extreme right-winger and has only visited my brother once 4 years ago when she thought he might not make it after his stroke. This sounds so mean, but I find that she leads her life as she lives her politics. Needless to say, we aren’t very close.

My brother has short-term memory loss, so if I visit him today he won’t remember tomorrow. To my sister there is no point in visiting, but we have wonderful afternoons. My brother loves to see me come in the door and all his memories are in place for the first 51 years of his life. There’s also really no one but a sibling that you can share childhood memories with. Though I know he tells his children I haven’t been there it doesn’t take anything away from that visit to me, because I know it’s buried deep inside him somewhere and I know that he feels the love.

BDM – My brother is 55 and has had MS for over 20 years, recently he’s also had a stroke. He’s in a nursing home. He’s 6’5″ and can’t walk – it takes 4 women or a lift to get him up. He can not be cared for in a home situation. Once you liquidate and go through your funds you have no choice but to go on Medicare and Medicaid.

My mother spent years in assisted living and nursing homes and was so scared she would run out of money – she did not – but she spent over $750,000 on her out-of-pocket medical expenses. People can’t plan for those end of life bills – you never know if you will be the one that has those kind of expenses.

I worry about what repercussions the short-term shut down will have on my brother’s care and I certainly worry about what the cuts will do to his long-term care. His caretakers are so hardworking, caring and underpaid. They honestly love my brother – they are exceptional people.

There are some things in a modern civilization we do for the least amongst us, and that is to try to give their lives some dignity. This is not where we should be making cuts.

It was ugly on both sides – neither team was shooting well but UCONN just shut Butler down, as well as, Butler had the worst game I’ve ever seen them play. They had 2pts in the paint the whole game!!!! The best team won – congrats UCONN, but a it was a completely defensive game with no shooting from either team really. Not a fun championship game at all.

Congratulations BDM – Yes it was a very ugly game – I’ve never seen anything like it – it was painful to watch but like Coach Stevens said UCONN had something to do with us missing all those shots. The best team won last night. But we’ll be back! You can’t keep a good dog down and Blue is a sweetheart!

I’m loving those guys milking that tortoise – she must be 100 yrs old – she’s so big! I know Boehner is a bonehead but I find it hard to believe he said this. He does come from a large working class family and many of them are still using their hands to make a living.

Buddy, I’m sorry to hear about your job, we can all see you’re talented and I must say one of the most gentle men I know. I hope you find work sign painting if that’s what you want. I would seriously be interested in a painting if you priced them on flickr. You are very talented – I feel sure you’ll land feet up! Kes- It’s like they can’t relate to the really big guys but they can relate to the 2 school teachers down the block that seem to live better than they do. They same is true with the local doctor, he doesn’t make the megabucks but he or she is a target because they live in the local community. These people have no reasoning ability that the union helping the teaching wage rise will eventually help theirs, nor that they are being manipulated. How do we counteract this?
