You should click on and keep the Visual tab as the active tab instead HTML unless you have a reason for doing otherwise.

The layout you see when drafting your article will then look like the article. In HTML mode, you will instead see HTML code and not see images, links, videos, etc.

The other benefit is that the Zemanta software we use operates only when you’re in Visual mode and at provides a list of suggested tags at the bottom of the right hand column that you can just click on “Add all Tags” (deleting any you don’t want) to apply tags swiftly.

So, in a nutshell, click on the Visual tab and stay in that mode, add images within an article using the first square icon beside “Upload/Insert”, click on “Use as featured image” once the image has been uploaded and take advantage of the one-click tag-adding widget at the bottom of the right hand column.

You should be locked and loaded now!

Got it and upon seeing it, I recognized that you’re uploading your image through the Media – Add New menu item instead of the Upload/Insert function within the post.

Info above on how to do this, you should be all set!

» Posted By AdLib On October 23, 2011 @ 6:08 pm

Murph, it appears that you are not uploading your graphic within your post which is why you don’t see that option.

To upload an image into a post, click on the first icon beside “Upload/Insert” which appears just above the top left corner of the text entry box, circled in red in the image below.

After it uploads, you’ll now see the “Use as featured image” selection at the bottom of the upload screen.

Murph, here’s a snapshot of the upload page, the screen that comes up just after you’ve uploaded an image within a post (using the square icon in the upper left above the text box as opposed to uploading it independently through the Media – Add New menu.

The location of the “Use as featured image link circled in red:

Right, thanks for the update, Murph.

We have two separate notification setups, one is for articles and the other is for comments. Resetting the Subscriptions boxes in your dashboard applies to being notified by email when new articles are published.

The checkbox you see at the bottom of the comment text box should be left checked if you want an email notification when someone replies to your comment.

The most common reason people stop receiving emails is as you describe, when a member’s system or software decides at some point that the emails from us are spam and begins blocking them.

The best thing to do is whitelist admin@planetpov.com (a whitelist is the opposite of a blacklist on spam and mail programs, tells them to accept all emails from that sender).

Cheers!

Appreciate the kind words about The Planet, thanks Murph!

And thanks to Kalima! Been trying to catch up since attending the protest and greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness on getting back to Murph swiftly.

Couldn’t be luckier then to be on the Admin team with you, Bito and KQuark!

Hi Murph,

Actually, the Recent Posts widget works similarly to the function you describe except, instead of only being visible on the Front Page, it is visible on every page at the site which provides for greater accessibility to recent articles. Regular readers and members always peruse the Recent Posts and Recent Comments widgets to see what the latest posts are.

In the Recent Posts widget, when new posts are added, the list of existing posts scrolls down but based on it’s length, posts actually don’t age off of it very quickly as was mentioned as a concern.

This would be the same case for any list of recent posts, including the manner you suggested, as new ones are listed, older ones would be moved back or down until they are eventually no longer listed as “recent”.

The Featured Slider is for highlighting selected Front Page stories for an extended period of time. At initial publication, a FP post will be at the top of the FP and in the slider but as more new stories are published, it remains “featured” in the slider even if it moves off the FP.

If you don’t receive emails when new Posts are published, it would be because you opted out of email notifications when you registered. If you go back into your Dashboard and select Subscriptions you can choose to receive emails on some or all categories of posts when they’re published.

As for promotion through Twitter, Facebook, emails and RSS feeds carried by around 90 sites, our articles do get a healthy amount of promotion whether they appear on the FP or in Speakers Corner. More promotion is always better of course so members can help on their own by using their own Twitter, Facebook, emails and sharing the link at other blogs and sites to attract more readers and comments.

We do seek and welcome our members’ suggestions about making the site the best blogging experience it can be, as can be accommodated with our limited resources (AOL hasn’t shown the courtesy of offering to buy us for even $100 million yet).

We have and continue to update the site continuously and though we may not incorporate a suggestion immediately, we may do so down the line.

Hey Murph! All new articles are listed in the widget “Recent Posts” in the right hand column.

FYI, when they’re published, all articles are promoted to our members through email notifications, to all of our Twitter followers and on our Facebook page to all of our friends.

Just go to – Live Events – Vox Populi and you’re there!

» Posted By AdLib On October 15, 2011 @ 11:15 am

Just emailed you Haruko! We now schedule posts to give them an exclusive window of time as “The New Post” which brings them more reads and comments. Your article is scheduled to be published first thing tomorrow morning!

Truth, thank you so much for noticing this and letting us know!

We just upgraded that software and that is indeed a bug that shouldn’t be occurring.

We’ve reverted to the previous version until this can be fixed.

Once again, thanks for the heads up, Truth!

» Posted By AdLib On October 13, 2011 @ 11:31 am

Very sorry for the delay in publication, AD, my bad! Thanks for your understanding and patience! Glad to publish it and it did get some solid props!

» Posted By AdLib On October 13, 2011 @ 11:28 am

Nothing’s wrong, we like to space out articles so they each get a good deal of attention.

Keep your eyes peeled…

Hey Emerald! Once a post is published, only the Admin can edit and update it. Probably the most efficient way for you to add updates is to post a comment labeled “Update” and we can add it to your post (just let us now when you’ve added an update!).

» Posted By AdLib On August 24, 2011 @ 3:03 pm

Cher, I was adjusting it to make it less prominent and it was temporarily in a bigger font. Sorry!

» Posted By AdLib On August 21, 2011 @ 7:18 pm

Hey Cher!

Your latest edition of the remarkable Daily Planet is all fixed and set to publish at 6 am!

What was causing the problem was the use of brackets in a section which caused a software issue. Parentheses around words are always cool to use in articles and posts though as an alternative to brackets.

Thanks for all your wonderful work! Hope it didn’t drive you too crazy!

» Posted By AdLib On July 22, 2011 @ 2:13 am

Cher – I just updated it yesterday, let me check under the hood and see if there’s anything I can do.

The thing is, this version is supposed to be streamlined to be quicker!

There are a couple of things to try on your side that might help.

First…and this is a big thing…check to see that you have the latest version of your web browser (which browser do you use?). This new WP version supports HTML 5 which newer versions of browsers are more optimized for.

If your browser is updated, try clearing your cache then closing and restarting your browser.

Please let me know if any of this helps.

Bito, where did that message come from?

» Posted By AdLib On June 10, 2011 @ 6:23 pm

It’s always okay and thanks for your thanks!

Bito has built our Twitter page into a going concern, it’s only appropriate to give it and him the respect they deserve!

» Posted By AdLib On June 8, 2011 @ 8:47 am

jkkFL – Usually that message occurs when there’s a double click or two clicks on the “Submit” button.

Just to eliminate other possibilities, try clearing your cache and cookies, closing your browser then restarting it. Please let me know if that does or doesn’t resolve the issue.

You have to place your cursor on Live Events (don’t click it) and you’ll see the Vox Populi dropdown box, click it and you’re there!

» Posted By AdLib On May 23, 2011 @ 11:22 pm

I removed those functions because they weren’t working fully, for YouTube, it was just displaying an image as a link. Was it working for Vimeo?

In posts and comments, you can always embed videos from any site by copying the “embed” code and just pasting it in (in posts, make sure you’re in HTML mode instead of Visual).

If you don’t see an “Embed” link on a video, click the “Share” link and “Embed” will be one of the available options.

Let me know if the button functions in WordPress were working for Vimeo, if so, I can restore them.

Sounds like your cache may have been corrupted, we did have Vox Populi on Friday Night as usual. When you say you didn’t see Vox Pop, do you mean you were on the page but saw no chats? Did you try clicking the link under the Live Events menu item?

Fill me in, missed you on Friday!

Kalima, thanks so much for posting this reminder.

We do want to publish articles in as timely a way as possible and by preparing articles so they are all ready to be published, members can help us do so.

» Posted By AdLib On May 8, 2011 @ 10:08 pm

Yes, to add video from sites other than YouTube, find the “Share” or “Embed” link on their video then copy the Embed code and simply paste it into your comment. It will then appear!

» Posted By AdLib On May 7, 2011 @ 3:16 pm

Thanks for your help, Bito!

» Posted By AdLib On May 6, 2011 @ 6:40 pm

Absolutely, have just done so!

» Posted By AdLib On May 6, 2011 @ 6:39 pm

Cher – Edited on fixed. You accidentally embedded a font style into the entire article that was interfering with your inserting links.

Great work and a memorable edition of The Daily Planet!

» Posted By AdLib On May 2, 2011 @ 9:46 am

You didn’t do anything wrong, the app that’s supposed to embed the video doesn’t seem to be working well with the latest version of WordPress.

It’s fixed now, what I’ve done is use our other YouTube embedding app, if you just copy and paste the URL from a video and add the letter “v” after “http” (https) the app automatically embeds it.
