Their stocks have gone up in the short term but Public Options and Single Payer are quick and simple hops from these reforms. As the insurance companies keep trying to screw the public, the pressure for public and not-for-profit options will grow irrepressible. If we’ve learned anything from the economic crash, corporations will readily destroy the long term to get more in the short term. The Insurance companies are too greedy. Look how their 38% rate hikes came just in time to help energize HCR. Dems in Congress were described as running scared and moving towards “the middle”, meaning against HCR and supporting any bill that could be seen as Progressive. Obama fought back and pushed HCR back into viability (thanks to all the citizens out there being vocal and those Dems in Congress who have never given up). Now, it is on the verge of passage and a huge step forward for this nation, almost 100 years in the making, will be part of his legacy and will re-energize his political capital. We are damn lucky to have Obama in the WH at this make or break point for the US. I can’t even imagine how permanently damaged and failing this nation would have been after 4 years of McCain/Palin.
