Fergie1, apparently HP rigged their system like a crooked casino, so members’ accounts wouldn’t be deleted when they deleted them. Their plotting knows no bounds.

Several members have said it has taken many attempts to delete their account, others have cautioned that even though you think your account has been deleted, it hasn’t been and you can still sign on.

With each deceitful ploy, they only affirm how untrustworthy and mercenary they are.

They won’t even respect their members’ right to close their accounts and deceive them into thinking it has been deleted…there are no ethics or principles left over there, just another greedy corporation masquerading as an ethical news/Progressive entity.

Smot, yep, I remember going on a number of them and that was our inspiration for Vox Populi.

I could be wrong but it seemed that blogging kind of drained the IRC chats and Facebook and Twitter have had to hammer it as well.

There were some pretty lively discussions that I recall. Not too dissimilar to Vox on Friday nights but without the trolls and guys constantly trying to cruise for women.

Oh, and I think that if folks supported sites like ours and the others you mentioned, then there would be bigger Progressive sites.

The only way to have another massive “Progressive” site appear would be for a hedge fund or corporation to fund it and those things are mutually exclusive.

Why not support the sites that are out there right now and help build them instead of looking past them and waiting for some other wished-for big Progressive site to somehow appear with no financial strings attached?

Public blogs like the ones you’ve mentioned and The Planet are more the kinds of places for those who want to stand up to what they find objectionable.

Hey abxnomore, welcome to The Planet!

Once you step back and have some perspective on the big picture of what HP is, it does change things.

I would hope that this is an Emperor’s New Clothing moment for HP, they transformed from being a Progressive blog into a corporate investment vehicle years ago, just dragging that facade with them to exploit Progressives for profit. Perhaps now, that facade will be in shreds and they can be seen for what they really are.

I’m sure there’s a lot of frantic re-assurances they’re giving each other at HP and AOL right now:

“This won’t last, those drama queens will come back! They always have!”

“It was the right decision! Who needs those troublemakers anyway, we’ll just have a site with more compliant bloggers who don’t stand on principle, then we wont have our bloggers disrupting the agendas we want to push with the site!”

“And do they really think this corporation is going to walk away from the big revenues we can get from identifying and datamining all of our members through Facebook? They’re out of their minds!”

Or something like that…

I was looking for a graphic for a new post I’m writing as a guide for new members on blogging at The Planet and came upon an article from 2011 from a member who had recently joined us after the AOL buyout exodus from HP, zootliberal.

The cautionary tale here is that as the anger subsided in them, many gradually drifted back to HP and in essence affirmed to HP that no matter how they upset members with their pro-corporate/anti-member moves, the members would eventually come back to them.

That had to make an impact in their considerations and expectations about implementing the Facebook rule.

So, here’s to standing by principles and not rewarding corporate greed and their pursuit of grinding down the individual into corporate profits.

Smot – Wow, that’s really something! I mentioned earlier, the traffic number is only one component in calculating ad rates, so are the number of clicks and the time spent on site.

Even if the traffic numbers improve, I doubt that clicks and time spent on site will recover well.

Just desserts for a site that treats its members as undiscerning followers.

We do have a thread for any and all comments, our Time Out for Off Topic thread is like our local coffee house where you can always grab a seat and post a comment about anything. You’ll find a permanent link to it in the Features 4 square in the right hand column.

Yep, I’ve seen and have posted far worse examples of HP’s sleazy “journalism”, especially the sex oriented and other very exploitative ones.

Absolutely, The Planet thrives on the contributions of its members. We’re a politics and opinion site, not what we would call a news site so we don’t have the luxury of just re-posting news articles to present “new” content. Our content is member driven, we seek and encourage our members to participate as much as they are interested in doing so, including posting articles and comments about the issues that hit a chord with them.

BTW, I have been a huge fan of Peter O’Toole and am very sorry to here that news. He was a remarkable actor, so many films of his are classics and others, just great entertainment. Alfie, Lawrence of Arabia, Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Stuntman and one of the most fun movies he made, My Favorite year.

He will be missed.

NoMan, that message you received actually means that you clicked your submit button twice for the same comment and the second incident of duplicate posting wasn’t executed.

There is no system here that deletes original comments because a duplicate is posted (I know HP prevents people from re-posting similar comments, especially when the first ended up in modification).

It’s kind of like HP Hangover, after having become so accustomed to comments being so casually trashed and treated as disposable, it’s understandable that one would initially assume that kind of process at another site.

But that’s not how we roll at The Planet, we have a genuine respect for our members and their freedom to express themselves so we would never delete a comment unless it violated our prime directive against attacking other members or expressing unbridled hatred towards other races/nationalities/religions/etc..

We are also thrilled as you can imagine to have so many top bloggers from HP join us here.

Same here, really pleased you’re here. We look at The Planet as a public think tank, we believe in the intelligence and insights of real people who live in the real world (as opposed to the blathering of agenda-driven pundits that live in a bubble) and the power and enlightenment that can come within and emanate from a community of conscientious citizens having discussions about issues that really matter…without corporations throwing all kinds of distractions and oppression of free speech into the mix.

Hey NoManIsAnIsland!

First off, that was an awkward wording that you point out but what I was going for is that our principles insisted to us that we had to leave HP.

Very much appreciate the very kind words and not a worry about your pointing out that section.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say HP could be on the way out because of this betrayal. I just think that this represents a big brain drain and substantial loss of Time Spent On Site statistics. Some have focused on traffic numbers, those can be misleading. Just as many people may be visiting HP but instead of spending a great deal of time there, they are now spending a fraction of that time there and thus the value of their visits declines.

My bet is that HP will happily continue as the deceptive and agenda driven corporation they are though with a substantially lower quality comments aspect but maybe, if those who have left don’t relapse, a new front against what they represent and advance will be on the rise.

Mr. Hoodoo, a very auspicious entrance. You really nailed it.

It is a study in rationalization to hear how those who claim to be motivated by principles, have to explain away why they don’t display those principles when they support a corporate entity that deceives them, disrespects them, poisons the internet and seeks to destroy their right to privacy…and become wealthier in the process of course.

I have often refuted the claim that the changing of a few minds at HP, which I don’t dispute happens on occasion, balances out the clicks and visits they provide to further enrich HP and their agendas.

It’s like saying you stand on principle against corporations not paying a living wage but keep shopping at Walmart just to tell other shoppers how bad corporations are. Huh?

Principles that are conditional, aren’t principles.

Let’s face it, HP has developed it’s addictive qualities through no doubt plenty of market research and people can’t help themselves but go back to their dealer for another hit. Human beings do like praise. They do like conflict and they do like exploitative stories. It is natural. But what principles are all about are putting one’s beliefs ahead of one’s gratifications. Doing the right thing especially when you have the desire not to.

Helping HP realize higher profits, even by trying to change them or their community from within is still being helping HP. Why not provide support to Exxon in order to blog against Fracking on their site?

Either your principles say that you won’t support an unprincipled corporation thrive and prosper or they don’t.

Corporations and people establish who they are and what their true character is, not by their descriptions of themselves but by their actions. I do think that any who claim to oppose what HP has become yet support them as a blogger has a credibility issue, to say the least.

Smot, love the idea of setting up an HP and FBI account as The Red Monk (sounds like a Batman foe).

I am familiar with her allegiance to John Roger, she has some truly messed up beliefs which is also why I found the Arianna Cult at HP creepy, all those people slathering compliments and submissive praise…really creepy.

Julianne, this is quite an insightful angle I haven’t heard yet. Of course our democracy and politics rely on anonymous ballots, there is no record keeping allowed to track what and for who each individual voted.

Yet HP thinks it’s just so cool to track our identity and political views together.

Kind of revealing that HP claims to be a journalistic operation yet sets policy only a corporation could love. Their actions and choices betray their true identity and what a facade the rest is.

CADawn, I think there’s a consensus here that the main reason for most folks liking HP was due the people who were there so if the people are coming together here and on other sites, then have we really lost anything irreplaceable?

The corporate coffee house may be boycotted but many of those folks are meeting together at other neighborhood coffee shops so the community transcends the meeting location. . I think as time passes, it will be seen as a positive change by most.
