A few years back, maybe 15-20 years ago, Walmart tried to come in to a small town in my next of the woods. This town is very quaint and more upscale…to this day, it is full of small mom and pop retailers and local companies…it is BEYOND adorable and THRIVING Seriously, it’s a jewel in the area. So much that is good about the town and it’s only about a 15 minute drive from the city. Anyway the people of the town FOUGHT HARD and won against Walmart coming in….the politicians used the ” it will reduce taxes meme” and will be good for the region…the people of this town…who are WELL EDUCATED…said bullchit..we don’t need a Walmart in town destroying our way of life and drove the backers of the idea OUT (including the politicians) and defeated Walmart. All these years later that town is still thriving while others who bought into the Walmart thing have deteriorated substantially. Competition was centered strictly on price and the average uneducated consumer didn’t understand they weren’t getting the same quality of product and thus forced out (by not spending their dollars) at retailers who sold a better quality product…thus in turn drove the higher quality retailers out of business OR in order to remain in business…those retailers sold the same cheaply made crap. FIRST of all, big box stores, stifle competition, and kill off mom and pop retailers…thus lowering EVERYONE’S standard of living by eliminating competition AND raising the cost of entry into the marketplace. Second, the cheaply made, JUNK those places sell..simply ends up in landfills, thus causing MORE damage to our environment. Third, the near slave wages paid at those entities, while providing RIDICULOUS wealth to the primary stockholders and executives of those entities further drives the gap in wealth inequity AND leads to further deterioration of quality of life for ALL of us. I don’t know why I thought most on here would be in their 30’s or 40’s. Especially because there is so much wisdom here, I should have realized that the group would be all different ages. I guess somewhere still in the back of my head (as a Gen Xer) I think of people who get into the computer as being from my generation or younger. That is a stereotype, obviously from MY youth.
