Also, corporate numbers are controlled more by balance sheets and stock prices more so than consumer behavior. Many a company has seen their customer base erode but yet their stock prices rise, because of creative business methods, such as opening in a new market. it’s not like it used to be and all these quaint old school business ideas of many are NO longer in play. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:40 pm While I agree they aren’t getting the stuff for free…corporate finance and corporate accounting is FULL of creative ways in which they make sure they benefit regardless. Meaning, whether there is pilferage or NOT, they still ensure their numbers are met. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:37 pm I tend to agree. I think we have some ‘irreconcilable differences’ going on in this nation. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:36 pm Good nigh A! Rest well. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:34 pm I just made that point myself Cher…the social contract WAS broken and not by the hoi polloi. So since the rules no longer apply for THEM…they shouldn’t apply to anyone. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:29 pm Abstract thought IS reality if we want it to be and accept it as such. I do not accept our social ways…I find them repugnant. Yes I know the social contract…and it was broken a long time ago by the powers that be *(the elite and the corporations). THEY broke the contract…tore it to shreds actually…YET they still expect YOU me and the rest of the hoi polloi to continue our end of the bargain when they are not keeping up theirs. I do NOT and never have locked anything I own. MY home is literally an open door at all times. AND if someone where to take something, they obviously need it more than I do. I’ve had things taken and I DID NOT CARE, not really…seriously I didn’t. It was an inconvenience nothing more. Stuff is not important PEOPLE ARE. AND when you treat people like a commodity you can’t honestly expect them to behave otherwise. Our society treats people as less important than things…I on the other hand DON’T. Things are not important. People and their inner selves ARE. If an employer treats employees as dispensable units…they deserve what they get in return. IF employers would treat people with respect and decency…I bet they would find very little if any pilferage. I know of a company, that when it started, employed such a philosophy. THEY could not afford to pay wages, at first, it was a start up….so there was a box with money, left open and empoyees took what they needed when they needed. NO one ever took more than what they needed. When the company took off and started making money, the owner SHARED HIS good fortune with those who took a chance on him…the company is still around and still abides by the same philosophy of its founders…treat people with respect and they will respond in kind…treat them like children or like things and they will respond in kind. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:13 pm And history shows that the concept of stealing was to punish the have nots who dared to take from the haves. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 7:01 pm A coat of paint…will go along way at making it chic again! I love paint! 🙂 » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:55 pm I have never locked my doors in my life…not on my house or my car. AND never intend on starting. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:51 pm Let me ask you something Kilgore…do you believe that these corporations were given what the EARTH has by divine intervention? DO you believe that land can be owned? DO you believe that what the Earth produces can be owned by anyone? I don’t. ERGO, in my mind stealing does not exist. Think about it. How can someone STEAL something from someone, when the item in question was never meant to be owned by any one person? Personally, I don’t believe in the concept of stealing stuff….I think it is all a misplaced concept. NO ONE really owns anything…not really, except themselves…and what is the greater evil…stealing a person’s selfworth, dignity and self respect (which corporate America does everyday without question) or stealing some stuff? » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:48 pm Actually NO the losses are NOT passed down to the consumer…that’s just what they tell you in an effort to keep everyone in their place. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:45 pm Dang…I made an error and the edit function was not working….my last sentence should have said… What is the greater wrong…stealing a poor person’s dignity and self worth OR stealing a rich man’s stuff? » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:44 pm As I said Artist, morals and ethics are subjective. WHAT one finds acceptable, based on their upbringing, experiences and beliefs, MAY not be the same as what another finds acceptable. That is why you cannot legislate morality…it’s different predicated on circumstances. I too, have been a business owner and have treated my employees with respect. HOWEVER, I know many companies that do not and have worked for such ruthless people. WHAT is the greater wrong…stealing another’s dignity or stealing their stuff? » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:41 pm I think it is morally and ethically wrong for executives to make 500X that of their lowest paid worker. I think it is morally and ethically wrong for executives who work for corporations to have no responsibility to society for the wrongs they do in a quest for higher and higher stock prices. I think it is morally and ethically wrong that many of the old money set, who made their money off of killing natives and using slave labor to continue to keep their money…and not have to pay restitution for their crimes against humanity. I think it is morally and ethically wrong that people who buy stock and demand those who run companies to only concentrate on the bottom line while ignoring their social responsibilities. I think it morally and ethically wrong that corporations don’t pay taxes, yet REAP many rewards from the societies within which they operate. I think it morally and ethically wrong that ALL companies do not share their profits with those who work for them… THERE is a lot in our society that is morally and ethically wrong Kilgore….however, Society accepts these things as being acceptable…I do not. So I CAN look the other way, when their own behavior is used back on them. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:37 pm I think you did imply it…but I just wanted to stress…white women were not in the same position! 🙂 » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:05 pm EXACTLY! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:03 pm While I respect your opinion…I guess it would depend on what your view of stealing actually is…personally I don’t believe the companies in question have the right to exploit human beings OR the earth and thus THEY are the ones really stealing. It’s a matter of perspective. Just out of curiosity…do you ever think about what was was done to the Indigenous peoples? THAT was stealing….manipulating people and literally killing them to get their lands is stealing…so the whole concept of which we live under WAS based on stealing. Or how about slave labor? HOW much of of our founding fathers wealth and “old money’ wealth, that is still a factor in today’s world, was made from STEALING the labor of others? If we want to frame this as a moral issue…I think it is imperative that we look at the WHOLE of the morals that led to this situation. Is is not stealing to LIE to someone in order to get them to sign on the dotted line? (Sales people do it everyday…and we as a society accept it)… Is not stealing to use someone’s labor and not pay them adequately when you yourself are making MILLIONS and BILLIONs OFF the combined labor of ALL those different people? How many corporate execs and shareholders could ACTUALLY make the products they sell and service their customers without LABOR? YET no one considers it stealing to not pay people appropriately… Ethics and morals can be a funny thing…you really need to think it through if you are attempting an ethical argument. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 6:01 pm Indeed. It is a form of civil disobedience…I had never thought of it quite like that…but it works! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:55 pm That’s not what I’m saying ghsts…I’m saying we have to pick our battles. THE battle with WALKER needs to be fought and fought hard. However, some of the other battles are NOT ready to be won right now and so fighting them HARD now is futile…I’m not saying those battles shouldn’t be fought…but timing IS everything…if you truly want to be successful. Sometimes, there are battles you just aren’t prepared to win and have to wait to fight. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:46 pm Actually Adonai…those are GREAT ideas. I knew a guy who used an old door and some of those workman’s horses ( I think that is what they are called) spray painted all the pieces a bright color and attached the door to the two stands and viola…a table. With 4 rummage sale, different chairs…it looked FABULOUS! He was an artist, and his colors were fabulous…it looked absolutely great! Milk crates are awesome…I’ve got a bunch of them stacked together like book shelves in my den. I used them in my kids rooms when they were little…excellent storage for toys and books! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:22 pm :)!! It’s ok Cher, in your case! It’s always worth it! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:16 pm One little correction Kilgore…WHITE MEN were not discriminated against…:) » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:15 pm You know Adonai…I tend to agree…I have a hard time being angry about low wage employees stealing from their employers. It seems to me, the whole issue could be avoided if the companies would PAY their employees a REAL living wage, and in line with their contribution to the company’s success AND treat them better. I have a hard time feeling for companies that take and take and take from society and their employees and then cry foul when it’s done back to them! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:11 pm I think it’s a great idea! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:08 pm Reading the comments about Walmart and the quality of most goods in the stores today, got me thinking about my own shopping habits and style, both in my house and with the clothes I wear….so I thought I would share some tips…you can have a beautifully decorated house and look chic in your attire, without being part of the Walmart or other retailers games. I for one, do not want my house to look like anyone else’s….I’m a little nutty that way…NOR do I want to arrive at a party, dressed like everyone else…I’m an individual and try to express that in how I decorate my home or dress. Most of the furniture in my home is vintage. Some antiques, some rescued pieces from friends or family members who were going to rid themselves of the pieces, and others bought from local furniture stores (you know the type…it comes ALREADY assembled and delivered!) The old stuff that wasn’t in great shape that was rescued, can be salvaged with a little paint or some elbow grease and sand paper. SPRAY paint is YOUR Friend!!! Faux finishes are always good as well, if the piece needs a little more love…I love using a marblizing technique or granite finish technique…Lowes and Home Depot sell products to help you refinish pieces that aren’t in great shape. I love distressed antiques and leave them as is, but they look great with some more modern fabrics, or more modern pieces…another great place to go is TJ Maxx or Marshalls and watch the sales/clearance racks. Paint is your friend. Also, wall’s can be painted to make a room look trendy or in style WITHOUT breaking the bank! Paint your ceilings…buy some molding…paint it…it’s amazing what you can do with a little imagination and some paint! Wall decor…USE old plates, purchased at Good will…or a tag sale…or maybe plaques..empty picture frames are always a goody too…old mirrors, the frames CAN be repainted. HAVE fun decorating your house…who says your house has to look like a Pottery Barn or JCPenney or Macy’s display? OLD books are another great decorating idea. Black and white pictures, printed on your computer and put in a cheap picture frame CAN look fabulous…if done in a collage. Clothing, you don’t have to buy the latest trends….find your own style…always wear a particular color or find a palette you like that looks good on you and buy CLASSICS in those colors….if you are woman; A-line skirts, basic slacks and blouses and a few V-neck sweaters and turtlenecks go FAR, especially in basic colors. YOU can always just add some trendy accessories. BUY quality clothes and stay away from the trendy stuff and you will look great! WE don’t have to play their game…if we don’t want to! We don’t need to replace things every time something new comes out. Its all so unnecessary. BUT it does take some courage to think outside the consumer box! As for food….you can do well there too, IF you really think about it!For example… I buy an organic cow every year from a local farmer. YES it costs quite a bit upfront…but overall the costs are CHEAPER per lb in the long run than if I bought at the supermarket…and I KNOW how the cow was raised and how it’s fed…huge! The difference in quality was extraordinary. I’m thinking, regardless where people live, there are farmers who are not that far away, who offer such things, it just takes a little research. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 5:06 pm LOL!!!! Fabulous! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 3:45 pm I couldn’t agree more Cher. You and I have discussed this before on the other forum. I, too, get frustrated by many on the left, because they seem to have unrealistic expectations about what CAN be accomplished in a relatively short time, WITHOUT backing of the rest of the governmental systems…i.e. The Congress and the SCOTUS. Unfortunately, the way our system IS set up, ,incremental change is about all you are going to get…the right didn’t get to this point overnight either…it happened over decades, but they had the right power structure and the right combination of votes in the Congress, executive office AND SCOTUS decisions on their side. It’s going to take a long time to get as far to the left as we were during the days of FDR. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 3:44 pm Bingo Kilgore! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 3:41 pm I think you bring up a good point…BUT As a few have mentioned, one of those groups can’t even SPELL…THERE is a BIG difference between an INFORMED educated opinion and an uniformed ignorant one. UNFORTUNATELY, there are manipulators out there, who are more than happy to use the dim witted for their own gain…and I think we see some of that from the Teaparty…the willfully uninformed and just plain stupid are easy fodder for those who have an agenda and are more than willing to USE those who aren’t all that bright in order to see their agenda come to fruition. I.e. Koch brothers…and MAJORITY of the “Joe the plumber” types in the tea party. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 3:12 pm Oh, me too Cher, me too. Egads! What a group of spoiled rotten kids on both ends!! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On February 22, 2011 @ 1:14 pmComments Posted By Abbyrose86
