First a little background: My 20 year old daughter is an epileptic. Her seizure disorder is the result of a head injury she sustained when she was in grade school. She has different types of seizures. Sometimes she has what used to be called, petit mal seizures and other times she has SEVERE grand mal seizures…some have lasted for over 10 minutes…one lasted for 20. These seizures are VERY dangerous…as they can cause severe brain damage or death. THUS, her medication is extremely important at controlling her seizures. We have tried many different meds over the years. Some of her meds have had very VERY bad side effects and we had to wean her off them and start a new regimen. One of the drugs she took before, when she was a teen, was known for causing suicidal tendencies in teenagers…my daughter was one of the teens who was affected that way by that med. She tried to kill herself and almost succeeded. She ended up in a Coma and in the ICU…she was in the hospital for 6 weeks after that fiasco. I insisted on a complete de-tox of her and fought with doctors, hospitals,insurance cos….like you would not believe (that was in 2005). Just as my daughter was going through all that the study came out in the NE Journal of medicine ABOUT that medication’s (and other meds) effect on teenagers (which were NEVER tested on teenagers…before being given to them…I may add). I give you all the background, so you understand I am very keenly aware of the consequences and dangers of prescription medication and HOW important the right medication IS to controlling neurological disorders, as well as the lessons I’ve learned dealing with our health care system while taking care of her all these years. SO after many trials and tribulations, we found a medication that works, with minimal side effects. Keppra. She does WELL on Keppra and it controls her seizures. YEAH. We have a wonderful neurologist…(again took a long time to find him…and had to FIRE many who weren’t very good over the years). ANOTHER YEAH. We have a great hospital where she goes when she has a bad seizure (another yeah) So our problems started when a generic version of Keppra came on the market. Our insurance refused to pay for the Keppra and would only pay for the generic. In addition, they wouldn’t just pay the generic price and allow me to pay the difference, which was only $20!!!! IT was all or nothing with them. THEN during this time, we lost our insurance. SO for most of 2010, I paid out of pocket for her Keppra. I paid $229 (the without insurance rate for the NAME brand meds). Until I couldn’t afford to do it anymore in September of 2010. My daughter’s doctor gave us some samples…which got us through to January of 2011. In December I was able to finally get my daughter on NY’s family health plus. Which was a substantial savings for our family. SHE just made the income guidelines for that program. BUT they wouldn’t cover the name brand Keppra…and covered the generic. So in January we filled the script for the generic. NOW here is the interesting thing, according to the receipt we received for the GENERIC…the cost of the generic was $414 (paid by NY Family Health plus) I inquired as to the cost of the Keppra and they told me the rate was $424. Interesting….as the month before I PAID out of pocket for the name brand $229. Her doctor has tried to fight with them to get her the Keppra but we still are getting the generic. AFTER yesterday he’s got to go back and fight again,As she seized yesterday, after MONTHS of NO seizures, a break through seizure…she had 5 in between seizures….larger than petit mal but smaller than grand mals. SO NY family health plus, will be paying for the ambulance and the 6 hour hospital visit from yesterday instead of paying the extra $20 for the appropriate medication. TO me, this reeks of PENNY WISE, POUND foolish thinking! NOW evidently, there are various generics on the market. And big pharmacies determine which generic to use and dispense based on cost and nothing else. SO they might one month use one generic and the next another generic. WELL, it turns out all the generics are slightly different and are slightly different from the Main brand…in this case Keppra. AND most neurologists are aware of this problem and have been submitting information to the FDA, but yet nothing is being done about this situation. There is so much wrong with this situation, it’s not even funny. From insurance companies dictating what drug can be used, based on economics (as many can’t AFFORD the meds out of pocket) to the different prices that pharmacies charge the insurance or the individual…to the FDA not doing anything about the problem with generics, to the LACK of common sense regarding perceived cost savings…that aren’t really savings. (I have a 20 year old daughter and a 22 year old son, a 18 year old step son and 20 year step daughter, as well as many nieces and nephews who range in age from 21-30). I think, predicated on how they were raised, and the culture they were raised in, maybe the part of the problem of getting them to become involved. Some of the kids were really really sheltered by their parents and have been babied. THAT group are a bunch of spoiled brats who have no idea how to do anything for themselves and are oblivious to things around them and are rather narcissistic. They don’t seem to care about anyone but themselves. Sadly, I know too many of these types of young adults. Others are very independent and aware. THOSE are the ones, I think we have a chance at getting involved. But unlike, the 60’s these kids aren’t necessarily on traditional college campuses, these kids are spread out more, and might be taking night classes or mixing their classes in between their work schedules. THIS group may have finished school and are working or maybe they didn’t go to school and are working. Because they are spread out more, I think getting their attention is more difficult. THUS the problem is NOT with the actual HEALTH CARE she receives…not exactly. The problem is with the insurance cos and the big pharmacies, as well the manufacturer’s of the drugs.
