While data and statistical analysis can provide a part of the information necessary to look at an issue, they only can provide part of any story as perspective is missing from just such analysis alone. A good piece of journalism, will include data, statistical analysis and various personal perspectives of all sides of an issue. The personal perspective IS important. As everything, ultimately IS about people. Now the spinning of stories without any documented evidence is another thing altogether, which is what I think you mean when you point to the myth of the ‘welfare queen, driving a cadillac’. That is an unsubstantiated stereotype…which is something else all together. That is utterly propaganda, but I don’t know if that is synonymous with telling a narrative. A journalistic story needs the human perspective and the perspective of those affected or who are part of the actual story being reported on. For example, when studying history, we NO longer, just view history from the eyes of historians. That is no longer acceptable in academia today. Public history is the new normal. Public history can provide a completely different perspective on historical events or current events. WHICH does include the telling of narratives, that is part of pulling the information together. A more specific example, I’ll cite is the public history of the Native American culture vs the formal historians version of history as related to the Natives told to most of us in grade school. THAT history we were taught was NOT accurate…not by a long shot. It was told with a slant toward the European conquerors and their view of things. FACTS and data, TOO can be used to sell a perspective. As formal history has shown as it is usually been told only from the perspective of the victor. The native American history and the public history (narratives) that are now included in the study of Native American culture is a relatively recent situation. The Native’s version of events was not included in historical study until recently, as in the last 10 years. SO for all this time THEIR narrative was left out of the history. I have a problem with the man’s ex wife. She’s a trouble maker. AND is always starting something. Every other month she does something. If it’s not going back to court under false pretenses, she’s sending ANONYMOUS letters. It’s all childish bullshit. Her latest was kicking the daughter out, and really wasn’t for a good reason. The daughter doesn’t like the ex’s boyfriend….with good reason…and the ex doesn’t like that…so basically it appears she is choosing the boyfriend over the daughter. So now we have to make room for the daughter at our house. Which is fine, I have the room…but it’s the bullshit of the situation, that got to me. AS to your problem….OY…that is a tough one. I guess I would take it seriously. I would contact the friend/relative in person and try to find out what is really going on. I tend not to like ignoring those situations…it could be just a cry for help or could be something MUCH more. Better to err on the side of caution. I know it’s terrible for me to think that way…but there are some people who are just such vile self centered, selfish creatures, that they themselves make it difficult not to hate them.
