I lived in Connecticut for some time back in the 90’s. WE made WAY more than that range and still felt like paupers in many areas of the state. And you are right, the working people or the ‘little people’ don’t live in the tony areas of Connecticut and they are not thinking about cosmetic surgery. THEY are simply trying to survive. Every time such things happen, it should remind us ALL, how fragile life really is and how we ALL are in this thing called life together. Tragedy and nature do not discriminate. They don’t care if you are black, white, Asian, Muslim, Christian or Jewish. They don’t care if you are rich, poor or middle class. THEY don’t care if you went to Harvard or didn’t graduate from High School, if you are young, old or a teenager. Nature and tragedy can call on anyone at anytime. Yet we, as a species, spend so much time in the overall scheme of things, in the pursuit of frivolousness. WE, too often FORGET, that what we deem ‘important’ most of the time really isn’t that important. WE are all guilty of forgetting what truly is important in life…which are; the earth and all its inhabitants as well as love and peace. Some of us get irate if we are late for an appointment or miss a deadline at work, or someone cuts us off in traffic or fret over credit scores and the peeling paint job on the house..or whatever the minor inconvenience is at the time. Then there are those who spend their lives pursing wealth and the attainment OF wealth at all costs…no matter who it hurts in the process. Others spend their time trying to make others lives miserable so that THEY themselves can feel better about their own lives. And yet others spend their lives envious of those who have more than they and wish to pursue a race to the bottom, where everyone is suffering. And then there are others, who see the inequities in life and wish to make the world a better place for all, they are often derided as being ‘idealists’ and unrealistic by those who don’t want to change the status quo. Life is full of many challenges, some caused by externalities, such as the decisions of others or a natural disaster, some by their own hand or through making bad decisions. Sadly life doesn’t come with an instruction manual, a specific time line, omniscience or a mirror into the future. YOU never know what tomorrow might bring. With this is mind, shouldn’t all be working to make life better for everyone? Shouldn’t we be our brothers keeper? Shouldn’t we all make an effort,not just after tragedy strikes, but ALWAYS to be the best people we can be? My thoughts and are prayers are with all the people who have been impacted by this disaster, as well as all the other disasters, both natural and man made, throughout the world. As such, I disagree completely, that higher education isn’t necessary, I actually think it should be mandatory. MOST people WON’T study on their own and MOST people don’t possess the ability either. THOSE who do, are outliers. THEY are not indicative of the norm. The average person will NOT take it upon themselves to learn history or politics. I had a couple toxic bosses in my life who made my life, utterly miserable. I didn’t keep THOSE jobs and funny….they both seem to have openings ALL the time at their companies. Hmmm…I wonder why! 🙂
