Some days I feel like reading fiction other days I prefer non fiction..other days I like to combine the two…and read about politics. 🙂 I believe that fiction and the telling of stories regardless of genre provides an opportunity to think the real world with the fantasy world. In my opinion the two work together and are very relevant and purposeful. I also believe that through ‘entertainment’ and all forms of artistic expression, especially fictional writings, can provide so much opportunity to learn different perspectives and provide much food for thought. So while it is entertaining it is also educational and thought provoking. The tale of Elphaba and her experiences in OZ in “Wicked” provide the reader with the concept of seeing “two sides” to every story and provides another perspective on the Emerald City from that we learned in L. Frank Baum’s OZ books. Tolstoy in “War and Peace” provided the reader with a better understanding of what life was like in tsarist Russia during the Napoleonic wars. Much more than what one learned from reading the official history of the time. Ian Fleming’s James Bond series, provided the reader with many concepts of fantastical devices that many would never realize are possible to actually create. As well as providing some incite, while far fetched into what may be going on behind the scenes of political discourse. Robert Ludlum went even further and provided a more realistic view of what may be going on behind the scenes with spies and counter intelligence agencies and gave readers a sense of cynicism about just what really goes on and is being kept from us…thus enabling the reader to sense there is more than meets the eye in any international relationship. Gore Vidal (my personal favorite) is just out there…and has provided many interesting perspectives on quite a bit of social and political concepts. From a Jim Jones type character who succeeds in ending mankind in Kalki to his interesting interpretation of media, corporate dominance and religion in “Live from Golgotha” and his flirting with time travel and the issue of paradoxes in “The Smithsonian Institute” and his take on historical events in “Lincoln” “Washington DC” and “Empire”…his perspective and imagination provide not just entertainment but exceptional philosophical ideas that make you really question much about what IS possible and what may not have been told properly about the past or what might be being mis-communicated(on purpose) now. So basically, I think that fiction writing is a gift and provides MUCH for society in many ways. I’m partly back for a change in career but I’m also back for me…to learn new things and ideas. I know a lady that is back in school, just to fulfill a dream. It’s an indoctrination of sorts, especially at the elementary level and high school level. I was always in AP classes. I guess I was considered smart, BUT I was a handful, I was a major rebel. I questioned EVERYTHING! Some teachers could not stand me, others loved me…there was no in between with me. One teacher who loved me taught Shakespearean Studies. It was a Language Arts course, we are able to choose from 4 different topics but it was required you take one of the 4. I chose This class…I got an A and glowing reviews from the teacher. ( I loved the class…to this day, I still enjoy the Bard of Avon and his works…especially his comedies…he was too funny…and sneaky!) On the other hand, the same year, my Social Studies teacher HATED me, with a passion…of course he did, he was a staunch Republican and I am not, and never have been. I have been a politics junkie, literally since I was 5 and watching the Vietnam war on the TV news. (Seriously.) Anyway, for my term paper that year, I selected for my topic, “Should the US have dropped the bomb on Japan”. I wrote a 20 page paper, with an extensive bibliography on the subject. Mind you, this was before the internet and home computers. My conclusion was NO. I got a C-. Bastard. He didn’t like my conclusion. Fast forward, to college, I used that paper AGAIN in college (my first time around, back in the 1980’s) and low and behold I got an A from my college professor. My college professor (the class was US History in the 20th century) LOVED my paper. So how can a paper that received a C- in high school, receive an A in college, unless there was a bias on the part of the instructors? And why would such a well researched paper receive such a low grade in a 11th grade HIGH School social studies class, if at the college level it was considered an A. I couldn’t agree more with this statement: “Maybe what HAS changed is not anything specifically related to education, per se, but our entire way of life, with the toys and distractions and media noise. That is some serious pathology.” I truly believe our current society coupled with today’s media is part of the culprit for much of woes, in education as well as our culture as a whole. While certain curriculum issues exist and lack of quality educators exist, in addition to students and parents who are not motivated or involved enough;I think that those things probably always did exist and now combined with our way of life and modern media, at all levels, we are seeing something more disturbing occur as a result. When I was a kid in elementary school, reading was considered a good thing. We used to go to the in school library every week…it was actually a class, like music, art and gym. I used to love going to the library, so much so, I can tell you to this day who the librarian was…Mrs. Bell…and SHE would save books for me that she thought I would enjoy reading! My parents read all the time. My father read the paper every night after dinner, while he had the news on in the background, while my mother did her crossword puzzles, and we kids cleaned up after dinner. My mother was addicted to crossword puzzles. (She passed that addiction on to ALL her daughters!) Dictionaries were literally throughout the house. My mother first language wasn’t English, so she was very big on dictionaries. I remember in the summer going from 6th grade to 7th grade, I was bored and decided to read the dictionary for fun. I remember it being considered a GOOD thing to be smart and well read. I remember that was something to strive for…when did it go out of style to be well informed, well read and to aspire to a higher level of consciousness and not just aspire to a higher income level?
