Actually that is a very good point.

The two concepts are slightly different.

I think many of just used the one term for both, when that isn’t really accurate. Point well taken.

Also, I agree with your second point as well…I’m not sure if outsourcing is always a good idea either.

What is going on is very disturbing, and very concerning. I’m not really sure what can be done…but we can’t ignore it or not talk about it…we need to continue to get the message out, so HOPEFULLY we can figure it out.

Continuing the discussion and trying to figure out exactly how we got to this point and how to fix it is KEY.

They did it in Egypt.

I don’t disagree with you at all. I too have worked with many throughout the world and in many places in Europe and closer to home, Canada, they would NEVER tolerate what we put up with!

It’s deplorable! The whole paradigm is a mess and needs to be fixed.

Until we get to the root causes of these problems, the problems will just keep growing like weeds, strangling the healthy plants in the garden.

I couldn’t agree more Adlib. And truthfully, I thought this subject a perfect tie in with the desire of many to do away with Unions or point to unions as being the problem.

Corporate malfeasance and unsustainable profit motive, incentive causes much of these problems and leads to a very negative outcome for the majority of people.

BUSINESS exist to benefit mankind. MANKIND was not put on this earth to benefit business…why is this so hard for so many to understand?

That has been my business philosophy all along!

Those hidden costs of unhappy and de-motivated employees can really, really cost a business! why don’t people realize this?!

It makes no sense to NOT treat employees well…and to share the wealth with them…It’s just GOOD business!

@PW…I think many owners of small businesses often delude themselves into thinking THEY did it on their own…and forget that they really didn’t. They buy into the propaganda and myths, that they DID IT and thus THEY deserve to REAP ALL THE REWARDS themselves. I think that may be why this simple little concept of sharing the wealth with the little people (their employees) who helped them get there is lost on them.

I couldn’t agree more, it is simple…incentives don’t have to be complicated. They just have to be realistic and have to accurately understand human NEEDS and behavior.

No one is going to feel motivated to kill themselves for an employer who doesn’t appreciate the work that they are doing to help that employer succeed. This concept is so overlooked by many in the business community.

There seems to be this ridiculous notion out there that employees should be grateful to just have a job…that concept is utter nonsense. THAT isn’t an incentive. That’s just a business deal between an EMPLOYER who needs people to do certain tasks and individuals who need an income. The incentive of a paycheck it what gets them in the door and provides the basic reason why they are there…it’s not an incentive for them to do anything more than what they are paid to do and I suggest if that paycheck is not adequate and does not provide the employee the ability to be (in Adam Smith’s words) “tolerably well fed, clothed and lodged” they aren’t going to care much about their job per se…not really. They might pretend they care in front of their boss, but behind his/her back….they are bitching, pilfering and looking to get out. THUS their focus is NOT on the business….but themselves.

That seems to me…to be common sense. Everyone, wants to know “what is in it for them”. And IF people are not paid enough, and IF the incentive structure is not sufficient enough (such as bonuses, wage increases, profit sharing, opportunities for promotion…etc.) AND they are being treated badly…they aren’t going to care about the business, PERIOD.

Owners and managers of businesses too often think because THEY care (again, because the incentives of them caring is in THEIR favor) they mistakenly believe those they employ should as well. What a goofy concept for them to believe!

I just got an email from moveon….there is one in just about every city!

WE all need to make an effort to go….of course where I am, we just got a bad snow storm, so I’m concerned there won’t be many who make it locally due to the weather (SIGH)

I’m a little confused myself at how much disregard many in our country have towards unions and don’t really understand why so many jobs have left the country. Unions were not the reason for company failures (that would be management’s fault) or jobs being offshored…(again that is the province of management). YET the upper management and their perverse incentives, that actually ARE the reason for business failures and outsourcing, layoffs, etal…are given a free pass…I don’t get it!

Anything that PEOPLE create and is RUN by people, has the capacity to be corrupted or badly run…but that doesn’t mean the concept is bad, it’s the actual PEOPLE who run the organizations that may be bad.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Unions level the playing field! Do you honestly THINK an individual on their own has the power and ability to make businesses operate fairly towards the laborers that are NECESSARY for them to make their profits?

DO you honestly think you have rights in the workplace that even come close to that of the Corporation?

YOU don’t. ALL but 1 state in the US is an employment ‘at will state’ I wrote a lengthy entry on this forum just this week on the subject of ‘At Will” employment and contrary to your opinion and the opinion of many Americans…your rights as an employee are very limited, WITHOUT a contract!

Unions provide the ability for collective bargaining and thus contract rights. LABOR vs management….thus LEVELING the playing field. MOST rank and file individuals in an organization, ON THEIR OWN, do not merit the time, money and energy to an organization to merit individual contract negotiation.

THE only individuals who get individual contracts are EXECUTIVES or those who have a VERY special skill or customer base, who are bringing that specialty to the table, and thus are valued. AVERAGE employees do not has such leverage unless as part of a larger unit…or a union.

Actually I think you have a valid point, the dems do need to dumb it down a bit. When I was studying journalism….(many moons ago) we were taught to write for a 6th grade reading level, as that was the reading comprehension level of most audiences. Sadly, we on the left often forget the bell curves and assume people understand more complex concept than they actually do…as a result, I think we lose people’s attention and lose the debates.

I is actually very difficult to do, more so than many think, especially if one possesses a rather large vocabulary, or a deep understanding of a subject.

However, I do think it is why the dems have a hard time…the messaging just doesn’t resonate with the masses. The GOP is very good at framing the messages in such a way, that even a ‘caveman’ could get it’.

Exactly Adlib….divide and conquer! by keeping us all arguing amongst ourselves and all the little issues…the elite are able to concentrate on controllung the two biggest issues, which control all the others…MONEY and power.

WE the dems need to stick together, especially on the big issues and quit the infighting. ONCE we make headway, than we can move on to other items on our agenda.

WE need to learn how to work together, first, before we can really make any significant progress towards fixing ALL that ails us.

And while I am on my rant…I feel the need to add, compromise is necessary FROM Both sides. Neither side always has the best answers…although I think the right is more wrong than right on most issues, especially economic ones…but we need to learn how to employ strategy and know when to ‘fold em, know when to hold em…know when to walk away..know when to run”….wasn’t that a song??? 🙂

But in all seriousness…we, the dems, need to learn how to prioritize and how to pick our battles…and know when to stick to our guns and when we can waiver a bit. We aren’t good at this…and our marketing absolutely sucks…we need better marketing and sloganeering. Sadly, selling our message to the masses has been a real problem for the Dems. WE need better marketing strategies.

I so hope you are correct…with what is going on in WI…I truly hope, this IS the wake up call many needed!

And the Media…well I don’t know what we can do about them…sadly. They seem so vested in continuing the status quo…but fortunately we HAVE THE INTERNET!.

I constantly post on Facebook and other sites, information about the GOP’s malfeasance AND have a big mouth, when out in the ‘real world’ when I hear people spewing Faux news or Rush Limbaugh talking points…I engage. Not always meanly…but I call them out.
