I wasn’t the most motivated student where grades were concerned. I truly didn’t care about grades nor did I care to be in class all that much. I always got ‘not working to her potential’ on my report card. Again, I didn’t really care….I was one of those who didn’t have to do anything and still got a B. SO in my mind, the whole lesson plan was a waste of time…ergo why I would change the subject and try to get into REAL discussions. It was the 80’s and there was so much more interesting things going on in the news, which I could relate to the basic subject matter in most classes..SO, I took it upon myself to make the connections. Sadly, My fellow students, didn’t care for it ALL that much. 🙂 It was really the only time I paid attention in class, was when I would start one of these debates. NOW I would think, as an educator that to be a good thing…all that ‘silly’ critical thinking and all…but Alas, my teachers didn’t see the benefit and neither did my classmates. Oh well. But the sad part is, THEY still haven’t gotten that critical thinking thing down and just parrot what people tell them. I don’t blame Obama for this mess….I blame the GOP, and their amazing use of propaganda against the ignorant. THEY are the problem, and HAVE been the problem for decades now. I also blame the American people. Both those who refuse to vote and those who can’t be bothered to take the TIME to inform or educate themselves. I am so tired of the PEOPLE who spew blatant falsehoods and those who believe those falsehoods. MY goodness gracious in the age of the internet, there is little excuse for the amount of utter ignorance that goes unabated. Most people, it seems, can’t even TELL subjective from objective concepts. Nor do they seem ABLE to comprehend or differentiate between what is FACT and what is FICTION. It’s really NOT that hard! Opinion pieces are often presented as analysis and analysis is often portrayed as opinion. WTF! I’m beyond disgusted with how this has been allowed to happen and that there are so many corrupt influences that use the lack of knowledge and laziness of the average American for their own gain…and I’m equally disgusted with those who fall prey to it! I shared an example the other day, of a blatantly lopsided piece of reporting from my locality, along with a reference to the commentary I heard about the topic. The people I know who fell for the story, are nice people…but also not the brightest or the most motivated to find out the truth. I went to grade school and high school with those people who commented. I’ve known them for a long time. THESE folks were the mid level students in High School, they were average kids both academically and socially and sadly they are a good representation of the AVERAGE 40 something voter, today. When we were kids, they used to get SO mad at me, because I was the student who was always trying to get people to PAY attention to what was going on politically and THEY were the kids who were always telling ME that ‘no one cared’. I was the kid, with the big mouth, who would QUESTION at length, our social studies teacher or ‘read’ more into the literature we had to read for Language Arts class, much to the dismay of my classmates. THEY wanted to just ‘get through’ the class…whereas I wanted to use the forum to incite debate. THE actual debate would usually come down to ME and the instructor (NO one else). Mind you I grew up in an EXTREMELY conservative burg…with most teachers being EXTREMELY supportive of Ronald Reagan. It was a nightmare to ME! I left when I turned 18 and HAVE NEVER gone back. There is so much going on NOW that is reminiscent of THAT turn of the century, as well as the last one. It seems that the transition between centuries, seem to provide an great opportunity for change and upheaval, as well as kooks of all stripes to gain momentum. The 18th-19th century saw major change and revolutions….and the 19th to 20th was rife with issues as well.
