On the subject of Catholicism, I have problems with some of the policies and the hierarchy. Not the people. I have met a lot of people who were warm, compassioante, dedicated people who were Catholic. I was fortunate enough to attend a small private college that was founded by a Catholic order of nuns, the Adrian Dominican sisters, and remained deeply connected to them. While a bit more expensive, it was worth every dime. Every one of the sisters who came to know me let me know that they were glad I was there. It was not a matter of contention that I was gay and pagan. They thought it was wonderful that I had the courage to be open about who I was, and the courage to go to a predominantly Catholic college as well. For those of you who have not met these women, they have been a voice for compassion and justice for a long time. One of their number was the first woman to argue a case in front of the Supreme Court. They were the first order in the Catholic church to divest themselves of investments in South Africa, in protest of apartheid, which earned them censure from the Vatican. They were the first Catholic college to offer a course in Gay & Lesbian Studies, so that health professionals could learn more about the people they were treating for HIV. Their convalescent center, for retired and disabled sisters, is on the motherhouse property, specifically so that the sisters living there can still feel a part of the chapter. They also have a Montessori school on the property, and the sisters are frequent visitors to classrooms as volunteers. One of the children’s favorites is a nun nicknamed Hell-on-Wheels, for her mobility scooter, and she is often seen giving small children a ride around the college campus on her scooter. At one point, one sister, the head of Campus Ministries, started introducing me as Head of Pagan Campus Ministries. She was a very good friend, and helped me through a painful break-up. Her frequently expressed wish was to find me a nice husband that would treat me right. I would no more paint every Catholic with the same brush than paint every white man, every Hispanic, every Republican, or every Democrat with the same brush. There are good and bad. I was told a number of times, by active-duty members of the military, the same thign I said above, virtually word for word. The Patriot Guard? I know some of those people. And those people wouldn’t have bothered to even acknowledge what was going on, much less support our efforts. Bill-O and Sean Hannity have both ranted and raved about Westboro. And that is why so few gay men and lesbians are willing to help in political action anymore. I am still willing to work for change, and be vocal in support of issues American needs to have addressed. You may take exception to my attitude. But on this subject, I feel I have a bit more cause for my opinion than, say, a member of the military or a member of the Patriot Guard. People who complain to me about Westboro’s actions in the past few years have gotten the same answer from me that the gay community got from them while Westboro was disturbing *our* funerals, *our* churches, *our* community centers, etc. I pat them on the head, smile with false sympathy, and tell them “Now, now, it’s okay. Just ignore those mean people, and they will go away. I know it sounds petty and vindictive. But my message is simple. While gays suffered hateful, vile attacks, we were laughed at and ignored. Most of the people who are complaining the most right now are the same people who laughed the loudest and scorned us the most. They wanted the gay community separate from “real” America. They wanted free speech reserved for “real” Americans. This example of “fracturing” of the left was not caused by the right. We all know which groups led with this attitude. They got their wish. And now they can suck it up. My well of sympathy is not endless, and it is not free to all. Incidentally, the gay community learned the best way to treat Westboro, without help. We were the ones who championed turning Westboro’s actions into fundraisers for our non-profits (one such action in Chicago bought a struggling community center a new ice-maker). But, we are just silly, disgusting non-human creatures.
