Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

Ain’t that the truth.

Back in 2001, the city I was in was looking to unload a piece of property that had been on its books for a while. The crumbling elementary school that had sat there had been torn down and cleared. The property would easily have provided space for five homes.

The organization I worked for was concerned with affordable housing, and worked to get the city to sell the property to Habitat for Humanity. The amount charged for the sale was small, a token really.

Suddenly, during a closed-door session of the City Council, days before the transfer of the property to Habitat for Humanity, the City Council voted to sell the property to a commercial interest, for a dollar. They later claimed that residents in the neighborhood had expressed concern that having Habitat for Humanity homes in the neighborhood would drive down property values, although nobody knows when these concerns were raised (not in any open forum to my knowledge) or who raised them (the neighbors were mystified).

We later found out that the “commercial interest” that bought the property was intimately connected with the mayor, half the council, and the city attorney.

My boss ranted and raved about that for weeks. I finally shut her up by musing that it really was too bad that her favorite TV show was on the same night of that fateful Council meeting.

NIMBY isn’t just a battle-cry of the isolationist and uncaring. It is also a handy excuse for those who owe other people favors.

KT, Mr. Steeler has slurred speech, unfocused eyes, is unsteady on his feet, and his face is flushed more than can be accounted for by the weather.

He’s drunk.

For those of you who wondered about the appointment of RIAA lawyers to the Department of Justice, here’s some fallout:

Cher, she doesn’t have to run at all. If she decides not to run, and cries when announcing that, she will get more votes.

My eyes! My ears! My sanity!

The drunk guy in the Steelers’ jacket was the most intelligent, IMO. *I* would have to be drunk to go see $arah. Perhaps comatose…

That’s right! $arah would be a great president because she’s a “rockstar”, she’s “refreshing”, she’s “real”… and she has no issues or policies. That’s what being POTUS is all about (and why I am voting for Pepsi in the next election).

And now from the Boston Herald, how to slant a headline:

St. Pat’s organizers snub gays, Veterans For Peace
Excluded Navy man says: ‘We’re protesting the only way we can’

http://news.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1324638

The truth is that the organizers snubbed and side-lined gays and Veterans for Peace *months* ago, but they (the gays and veterans) are holding their own parade.

Worried that God hates you because you’re gay?

There’s an app for that.

Bassets are proof of the fact that if you are having a good time, it doesn’t make a bit of difference how ridiculous you look.

If we were all less self-conscious, we’d be a lot happier.

I see nothing to argue about there.

In the background, is that a pipe organ? Taking up the back wall?

Where is the person playing it?

In overcast Vancouver Washington, we have no proof that this “supermoon” exists, and posts to the contrary are simply part of a conspiracy to make us doubt out perception of reality.

Glad someone gets to see it. sigh.

Sheesh. Straight guys and architecture…

Adonai: Oh, I already saw that movie.

And it’s “conservatory”, not “observatory”.

It’s in his job description.

Trust me. It’s a contractual obligation.

Adonai, I don’t understand. Who is Butler and what did he/she do to Brad Pitt?

The first weapon of politicians. The non-human are not able to defend themselves. They have no rights.

If one wants to create an enemy of the “other side”, first you make the “other side” not-human.

In all likelihood, those comments were probably not even from those who live anywhere near the city.

There are trolls all over who delight in commenting on those issues.

I don’t know why we have to continue this asinine reference to people as “illegals”.

And I just reported one of the commenters for his juvenile attack against the two officers in the article.

sigh. why can’t we keep adolescents over 18 off the Internet?

If the teachers that I knew and respected “lived it up” for two months, I would not blame them. They dealt with enough crap for the other ten months.

But I know for a fact most of them were working part-time jobs over the summer, taking classes, and hosting neighborhood children in their homes.

Several teachers that I knew hosted foreign exchange students, in addition to their own kids, while teaching.

It amazes me, astounds me, and disgusts me how many supposedly-rational people believe they have a right to order about an expert, on subjects the ijits have no idea on. I have to wonder how many of them order their mechanic around while their brakes are getting worked on – that would be a self-limiting disorder, I think.

You don’t tell a surgeon how to operate.
You don’t advise a lawyer on how to act in the court-room.
You don’t tell a dentist how to fix your teeth.
You don’t joggle the elbow of a bomb-disposal expert.

What gives these people the right to order about a teacher?

No, as chocolate is the universal specific, that falls under “health care”, therefore it is not important.
